Under the Lake/Before the Flood My Beloved
Other than Sleep No More, I really enjoy every episode on here. It was so hard to choose. I put Zygon Invasion and Heaven Sent, but honestly it depends on my mood. This poll made me realize that season 9 might be one of my favorite seasons.
This one was really difficult with only 2 choices! By far my favorite series of Who, at least 8 of these episodes are favorites and I adore the hybrid arc(12 and Clara are soulmates and I will die on this hill). Magician’s Apprentice/Witch’s Familiar is probably my favorite series opener and a great showcase of Davros, Missy, Clara, and all of their relationships with 12. Under the Lake/Before the Flood is the best base under siege story with a phenomenal guest cast, one of Murray Gold’s best individual story scores, and top tier production design and cinematography, something that stays consistent across the season. The Girl Who Died is also an episode I would defend as great(until the last 10 minutes), the plot is extremely fun and hopeful and allows for unique character exploration for the Doctor, but also gives Clara another chance to shine along side Maisie Williams. Now to the episodes I actually picked! Heaven Sent and Hell Bent, just perfect in pretty much every way. Heaven Sent’s script should be studied by anyone looking to become a screenwriter for its demonstration of efficiency in it’s writing, nothing is wasted, every line and scene either advances the plot, dives into the character of the Doctor in a way we’ve never seen before, or both. The directing from Rachel Talalay is the best we’ve seen in Who, with visual storytelling wherever you look and an instantly believable, gripping fantastical location. This directing extends to Hell Bent, with a slightly weaker but much more emotional complex story that delivers on the Hybrid arc with the best character work in all of Doctor Who, something that, in my opinion, is infinitely more powerful than the lore dump and/or twist we were expecting. 12 and Clara’s relationship is the most compelling in the show to me, and this episode gives it the justice it deserves, with emotionally complex storytelling that I’m worried we will never see in Who again, at least on television.
This is my favorite series and I love all of the episodes so this was incredibly difficult. I was flipping between Under the Lake/Before the Flood and the Zygon 2 Parter but ended up choosing the latter.
8 episodes got voted, which is quite insane.
There are a few in here I find fine to good, two I would call excellent, and the rest I either don’t care for or actively dislike. S9 is a mixed bag to me and I like it more than I think when I watch it. However, I don’t like it enough that it’s high on my rewatch list ever. It’s fine. But I’d pick s7 first.
scorching hot take holy,im the opposite i just hate series 7 lol
Most people do, and I love Capaldi but I think I love Smith more. In this series, Husbands and Heaven Sent are like the only two I would go ooo I want to watch that, and I actively really dislike three of these eps
There is only a single episode in Series 9 I don’t like (no not that one), though I can’t resist voting for HS/HB, if I wasn’t voting for them then I would 100% vote for Under the Lake/Before the Flood
S9 is my favorite season except Flux and every episode except Sleep No More is at least a 4/5 but the finale trilogy is still the easy answer here because it’s my #1 Doctor Who story of all time, so I’m upset that I can’t actually vote for all three parts of it
Series 9 is superb (like all the Capaldi Seasons, really). I do adore Heaven Sent/Hell Bent, obviously. Husbands, Under/Before, Face the Raven are superb as well, but I am going a bit odd with my Choices here: While not my favorites by any mean, I think The Girl Who Died and The Woman who lived are excellent.
But honestly, any of the other ones would deserve a Vote from me if I am being honest.
