first time i see someone insinuates doctor falls is bad…
Yeah, I really just don’t get the love for that one.
This is impossible for me to vote in.
The Pilot is really good.
Smile is wonderful.
Thin Ice is fantastic.
Knock Knock is a favourite of mine.
Oxygen is another favourite.
The Monk trilogy is just superb, I love it.
The Eaters of Light is great.
Empress of Mars is very fun.
World Enough and Time and The Doctor Falls are personal favourites.
Oh I love Series 10
It’s a good season, but my least favorite Capaldi one. Absolutely diabolical only allowing a choice of one though, as I’d have of course gone both parts.
World Enough and Time is such a brilliant episode. The presence of the Cybermen is just so sinister and I love it. Some of Missy’s best moments are in this episode and the return of Simm’s Master works quite well. Ah, and Bill’s absolutely heartbreaking storyline gets me every time.
Some honorable mentions would be The Pilot and Thin Ice, both good fun and written well.
Series 10 always has and probally always will be my fav series, every episodes really good and it’s definately become my confort watch. The pilot is an exelent companion intro episode, thin ice is great for the relationship with Bill and the Doctor, I think about the consepts in Oxygen and Extremis regulary (also love the idea of missys redemption arc (also I just love Missy)) and the finale is amazing (definatly the best cyberman episode in my opinion) and would have been a great ending for the characters, although I do still like twice upon a time as a fun christmas one.
Ooh, I’m not out on my limb by myself! I too don’t get the fuss over The Doctor Falls. I don’t like Bill’s ending (Moffat being incapable of leaving someone dead, again) and there’s something about the shift in aesthetic between World Enough and this that doesn’t work for me. The stuff on the farm just doesn’t work for me very well.
Personally I don’t find the not leaving people dead thing to be a problem, but I do think the return of Heather came rather out of nowhere and wasn’t really something that was all that hinted to throughout the season (can only think of one line, “I don’t think they’re my tears” at the end of The Pilot), not to mention derivative of Clara’s ending a season prior, which I think is a lot better. But, the Doctor and Master story and pretty much everything else is fantastic, making up for Bill’s ending’s shortcomings. The farm stuff is fine, it’s a colony ship, they had to make food and everything somehow. Big enough ship to fit farms in on a few floors, and also with the time dilation they’ve essentially been on that ship for centuries.
I wouldn’t find it a problem either if he hadn’t already done variations on it with Amy, Rory and Clara.
I fully appreciate the logic of it in the context of the world ship. I just don’t think the scenes work particularly well for some reason.
It also probably doesn’t help that 12 is my least favourite incarnation so any focus on him isn’t going to light my fires. I also don’t particularly chime with Missy. I have similar issues with Dark Water/Death in Heaven for those reasons.
(And that’s two season finales with the same basic elements… hmmm).
Once you notice the pattern, it is quite coincidental that every penultimate episode in a Moffat series [excl. S9] features Cybermen. Man just loved 'em. [1]
Also:
- Series 8 finale = Master/Cybermen
- Series 10 finale = Master/Cybermen
- Series 12 finale = Master/Cybermen
Not making any particular point here, it’s just funny how things worked out.
Edited to add: they’re in every Episode 11 of a Moffat series! ↩︎
It’s really a shame you don’t like 12. Personally don’t understand how one couldn’t even if you’ve explained.
Not really. We all have our likes and dislikes. I like a lot of his stories, just don’t click with the characterisation as much as other Doctors and he does get better across Series 9 and 10. I just much prefer 11 and 13 in terms of modern series. They’re more what I want from the Doctor.
It’s not like I refuse to watch his stories or miss out on anything. It’s just not an era which fully does for me what other eras manage to do.
I’m sure there’s things you don’t like that I would find difficult to understand because I love them (The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe for example…).
As much as I am a staunch Capaldi lover, I don’t really jive with his S8 characterisation either, and it’s such a tonal whiplash following 11. I think it helps knowing it gets better in S9, and I quite enjoy the character conflict between 12 and Clara.
Love it, fun and heartfelt episode, it has some issues but the positives far outweigh the negatives.
World Enough and Time is the best Genesis of the Cybermen since Genesis of the Cybermen, Cyberman body horror at its finest. The initial hospital scene gives me chills even now
It probably would have been better if they’d repeatedly cast Heather as a background character in episodes of the rest of the season, giving the idea that she’d been keeping tabs on Bill…
Agreed, or any sort of hint that she was still relevant to the story. And I think if this was always a season Moffat really wanted to do, I think there’d have been a more clear through-line.
Yeah, most likely there would have been. Though it’s also possible it might’ve been pushed hard enough that the season itself wouldn’t have been as good.
I know it would have been a bit of a bleak ending for Bill, but I would have liked it if instead she went with Nardole and became a protector of the villagers, becoming something like the cowboy at Mercy, or the Doctor at Trenzalore. But I don’t really mind the ending we got
I think this was very much my problem which is why I probably find his stories easier to enjoy now in retrospect. I’ve watched quite a few recently and really enjoyed them but probably in spite of Capaldi rather than because of him. I have a similar situation with Pertwee. I don’t particularly like his characterisation of the Doctor but I really enjoy some of his stories (Inferno is easily top 5 for me).
