What is the story behind your avatar?

Inspired by the recent discussion on the Free For All Chat thread, as well as the earlier thread about the story behind our usernames, I am curious to know what the story behind everyone’s avatars is.

What is your avatar, and why have you chosen it? Are you always using the same one across different platforms, or do you like to switch them up? What’s your usual avatar philosophy?

My avatar is a picture of the Eleventh Doctor with my face on it. It’s made with some basic photo trickery where I’ve combined two photos. I used to have a picture of myself (taken by a professional photographer for a political campaign) as well as an AI-produced version of said photo, but I felt that I wanted something more Who-related but with a personal twist, and I’m pretty happy with the new pic. I’d probably rather have a nice drawing of myself as Eleven, but I have zero artistic skills, so this felt like the easiest solution.

Also, I usually have a photo of myself as my avatar on all platforms, as I don’t mind showing my face to strangers. I believe that this also makes people trust that I am a real person rather than a bot, which is also a bonus.

That’s my story; what’s yours?

It’s Nardole because I haven’t decided what I actually want yet.

Vicki is bae… but seriously, I rotate between Vicki, Zoe or Isobel with funny expressions. They sure have some amusing ones.

Next is finding some amusing Barbara and Susan ones.

My Discord PFP has more of an interesting story though!

I wanted a logo to go with the D&D homebrew that I make, and wanted to incorporate a J and P into the logo, ended up with this design, the hexagon sort of hinting at a D20, the J and P having a fun almost connected design, and making up a sort of hourglass shape, the potion for the homebrew that I make, and the Star because the biggest project I’ve got is making a Priest Class

I keep my profile pictures consistent across my socials (not that I have that many), and it’s always my own artwork. The current one is of Ianto Jones covered in blood, and while I don’t think it’s my best work I like it and it’s Doctor Who related and I don’t like changing my profile picture very often, only every three or four years or so.

I have a different profile picture everywhere because I’m bad at just picking one, although I don’t change each individual platforms pfp very often.

Obviously this is a doctor who site so I wanted to use something doctor who related. My favourite character is the Meddling Monk, but I also have a fan regeneration of him I made so I went with that to make it more personal to me.

I’ve been marvelling at your picture because it’s so lovely and joyful!

I’ve noticed this - and you change your picture fairly frequently - so I sometimes think we’ve gained a new member before I read the username

Who wouldn’t like 'em? Cool and bog monsters! Well, all poor victims in the Jurassic Park films probably aren’t big fans!

Well, the reason behind my avatar always being Sweetie Belle is tied into my username explanation, so probably no need to really repeat it here.

As I recall, my original avatar was this one, by bluedrg19:

Then I went and started cleaning up all the sketchy bits and started using a cleaner version.

Then I actually traced and redraw all the lines. Then I redrew the whole thing, and went through a number of variations, as I changed the background, added and took off a santa hat, that sort of thing.

I also did use other people’s Sweetie Belle drawings for holidays. I often used this one by malwinters for Halloween.

Here’s a Christmasy AI one I used last year:

The one I had when I came over here was drawn by me, referencing closely the webcomic “Phoebe and Her Unicorn”, and trying to draw Sweetie Belle as Marigold Heavenly Nostrils in the comics style.

My current one is one I generated by ai, trying to do more computery mad sciency takes on things. Not absolutely sure where the original’s gotten to at the moment, but here’s a copy, probably somewhat smaller.

A classic paper in linguistics published in 1958. Really love the elegant design of this experiment. I should find a kid to test them on this someday

Now I have the same avatar and username across socials that I’m still active on. I like to have some consistency on that, just to keep my mind clear, in a way.

Found another funny one.

Well, I usually have a picture of a current favourite character as my profile picture, with a pride flag behind them if I have the time to edit it. I change them once or twice a year usually, depending on when my interests shift. Currently very much in love with Romana and being nonbinary feels very relevant to my identity, so this is what I did

I’ve been wondering about that avatar on Discord! Nice thinking behind it!

I’m no fan of ponies and unicorns, but that’s a nice one!

If I’m being honest, it was your avatar that gave me the idea for this thread. I kept looking at it and wondering what it was. I thought it was some Chinese character I don’t know about. But this explains it!

Your avatar is so lovely!

Nuff said!

Another. I think this one will stay for a while.

EDIT. Flipped the image so that Susan is incredulous as to what I am typing.

This whole time I thought your avatar, @MrColdStream, was an actual photoshoot where you were hyper-focused on replicating every detail of the original image lol!

Also this thread is helpful because there are a few posters here whose avatars I’ve wondered about.

I encountered this paper on Tumblr not too long ago and immediately went: Hey! Ain’t this that guy from Tardis Guide?
