Took a break at the end of season 17, but have since watched the Shada live-action/animation mix, enjoyed The Leisure Hive and I’m currently really liking Meglos. In a way, it reminds me of something like The Sensorites? Also Jacqueline Hill is there, which is always a plus.

22nd century Earth folk….Deadly Assassin Time Lords.

Is really shiny skin a sign of technological advancement and sophistication?

Does that explain my damp concrete complextion.

This evening my partner and I watched the end of the Eleventh Doctor era.

First up was the minisode The Night of the Doctor. This was more for me. My partner hasn’t seen any of Classic Who, other than An Unearthly Child episode one, so they didn’t know about Eight. They thought it was cool that he got an ending once I explained it.

Night is a fun little piece of fan-service, but it also manages to show how much the Time War is effecting the rest off the universe without showing it. The reaction of Cass is enough. Paul McGann was perfect as the Doctor, almost as if he had been playing him for more than a decade already. The Sisterhood stuff was great, and the Doctors reaction to it all was perfect. Not much more to say other than it worked on all levels for me. 5/5

The Day of the Doctor is a serial worthy of the 50th Anniversary. It combines fan-service, easter eggs, and a great story. Everyone gives a great performance, with special note to the three Doctors and Jenna Coleman.

It’s not easy making a serial that is a celebration of Doctor Who while also trying to balance old and current cast. I think it is a rare instance in DW where in manages to balance the intimate story of the Doctor and the spectacle of the Time War. The flashes of the spectacle were enough to tease what was coming, but not enough to bore me. And by the time they went all out at the climax I was invested and couldn’t wait for it.

I still have issues with the Doctors “secret”, but it doesn’t really bother me in the face of such a fun celebration. 4.5/5

We watched The Time of the Doctor next, but I have a headache, so I will do a mini-review later.

The Time of the Doctor is a great finale to the Eleventh Doctor’s era, that both manages to give him a send-off that stays true to his character, and tie up some loose ends to his era.

The plot wasn’t overly complicated, but it was enjoyable enough, even if it didn’t necessarily have enough going on. It kept me entertained nonetheless. The spectacle was the right amount of “epic”, without falling into the trap of repeating itself.

My biggest complaint about the story is that it hangs on the conceit that the Doctor can’t regenerate any more, and that his death is inevitable on Trenzalore. We already know about Capaldi so that entire thread doesn’t hit a lot with me.

4/5

We then moved onto the first story in the Twelfth Doctor era, Deep Breath. We were about halfway through before the yawning started. It was abandoned for sleep. It’s basically a double episode. Neither of us liked the first half. Everything before Clara and the Doctor meet in the restaurant is fairly poor. The comedy doesn’t work. The serious moments don’t work. No one is really likeable. It was getting good again, but it was too late. We’ll pick it back up tomorrow, and hopefully it can win us back.

Series 8 is when I first stopped watching on broadcast. It just didn’t sit well with me. Here’s hoping it can change my mind. I know I will like series 10, but there is a lot to get to before then.

And Death of the Doctor is still perfection. We’ve gotten a few more classic companion returns since I last watched it, and this is still probably the best one

THANK YOU.

Well, I certainly don’t agree. I think it’s a great premiere, I like all of those things. I’ll give you it’s a tad too long though.

I’m glad you enjoy it, but it just did nothing positive for me in the first 40 minutes or so. The scene that I mentioned was great, and I know it lands the ending, but I just think back to The Eleventh Hour and am disappointed.

I know he will win me over, but it’s if my partner keeps watching.

Deep Breath is a really good episode that should have been 50 minutes at the absolute maximum. I like a lot of what it does but it definitely suffers from padding.

Deep Breath could’ve been such a tight 50-minute opener. It definitely has pacing issues. Does anyone know when it was decided to show it in cinemas (ie. before scripting/production, after?) – what I’m getting to is, was it always planned to be a 75 minute episode or was it extended when they decided it could be shown in cinemas?

It wouldn’t surprise me if the BBC were all systems go for a longer debut regardless, given how huge the recent 50th had been, etc. But it just seems a little bit of a shame to me that there’s what feels like a tight standard length episode in there that seems to have been bloated and padded with unnecessary bits of nothingness.

Watching ‘Cold War’!

I had no idea David Warner is in this!

He’s a great actor, I wish Big Finish would have worked with him at least once or twice

Actually a lot of recognisable faces here!
