What (DW) are you currently watching? (Part 2)

You know, Series 11 is one that I appreciate what they were going for, and I found very few if any episodes truly bad. But similarly, very few particularly impressed me either. So I find it a more middling season overall. Like averaging around a lot of 6/10s kind of deal (I didn’t check the exact number, this is just by vibe), all generally ok.

I liked it quite a lot. Even some of the weaker episodes have stuff I like a lot. Ghost Monument has the finale scene with the TARDIS, Arachnids has the stuff with Graham mourning Grace, Tsuranga has some characters I like alongside cool moments and a fun monster, Kerblam! has basically everything until the reveal of Charlie as the villain, Ranskoor Av Kolos while very flawed I still think picks up quite a bit and gets exciting once the TARDIS Team actually make it to Tim Shaw’s base.

And if you want to look at what episodes I think are good (higher than 5/10), it’s over half the season and four of those (Woman Who Fell to Earth, Demons of the Punjab, Witchfinders, It Takes You Away and Resolution) are 8/10 or higher. It’s just that for the rest you have two decent but flawed stories in The Ghost Monument and Rosa and then the last few are mediocre or bad.

Having just finished Series 12 idk which one I prefer so far. Stat-wise they are the same average for me. S12 technically has one more story that I’ve favourited over S11, but I think I like the fresh and new feeling of 11 over 12s story arc because even if I like the two-part finale as a whole it was still very much a mixed bag and while I don’t despise the Timeless Child twist it’s not something that was executed brilliantly either. S11 having no story arc outside of characters growing (primarily Graham and Ryan dealing with Grace’s passing as well as Ryan coming to accept Graham) feels more relaxed rather than 12 where they tried to do a big arc again.

I think that’s a good assessment, even the “weaker” ones still have numerous good moments in them.

Currently watching The Pilot Episode seeing as it’s been added to the site. I’m watching the 35 minutes version with all “takes” intact. I prefer the more “adult” Susan compared to An Unearthly Child.

I didn’t know the Pilot episode had been added!

So I’m going to watch it!

(Apparently the pilot episode has a commentary with Verity and Waris! So I might watch it twice!)

Nothing atm. Keep meaning to rewatch Inferno. Last story I watched was The Satan Pit.

All watched and reviewed.

The Pilot Episode is an oddity that we are thankful still exists. And alternate take on the first episode of An Unearthly Child, it features slightly different dialogue, costumes, and characterisation.

The acting is solid across the board, but there are a lot of dialogue flubs throughout.

I really like the characterisation of Susan. She seems more “adult” and “weird” than her Unearthly counterpart. It’s subtle, but it’s a difference I quickly notice.

The Doctor is a more terse and, almost, malevolent, than in the main show. It feels like he is three steps away from killing the teachers and not feeling any remorse for it. I’m glad they toned him down somewhat.

Ian and Barbara and mostly the same, or if there are changes it is so minor to not be worth noting.

Other than the flubs there are a lot of technical errors. The two main ones are the TARDIS doors not closing, and cutting from Ian and Barbara to a Susan flashback, which completely steps on some of Ian’s dialogue.

This episode is an oddity that is well worth seeking out if you are somewhat interested in how a show was shot in the early-to-mid sixties. Also, it is worth trying to watch the version from the “An Unearthly Child” DVD as it has all the parts that were recorded for this “Pilot Episode”.

Halfway through The Invasion of Time, and once again, Rodan is really pretty and Leela should’ve married her. Lesbians. They’re in love.

She also gets to play in a set which I feel could’ve been the basis of a really cool TARDIS interior design. The particle accelerator is pretty much already TARDIS console shaped!

My partner and I have just watched 2 episodes. The Crimson Horror is fun, and quirky, serial. I like how the beginning is a Doctor-lite story that sets up what is happening. I do love the “ye-olde” flashback to explain how Eleven and Clara got where they were. Also, bonus for being set in Yorkshire. Yes I have family who sound like that, and there are some people from my home town in it. 3.5/5

Next up was Nightmare in Silver. I don’t have many fond memories of this one, but on this re-watch I found it a solid little story. Is it a bit silly? Yes. But since when has that stopped me from enjoying something? The kids are annoying, but the Cybermen have something to do in it, even if they do move weirdly. It kinda looks like a combination of runway strutting and Three Stooges. Warwick Davis steals the show though. 3.5/5

Finished rewatching Crimson Horror and it’s better than I thought. I always thought the Doctor covered in red skin (or whatever it’s called) was a bit off putting but the rest of the episode is decent. Ada and Mrs. Gillyflower have a nice complicated relationship. Yeah, I agree that the Doctor kissing Jenny is weird. Used to think it was the worst of series 7 and it might still be but it’s definitely not as bad as I originally thought. Only have Nightmare in Silver next before I get the series 7 badge.

Spent 15 minutes watching the Blue Peter minisodes[1], they were charming little things and felt quite nostalgic for the days when I’d tune into Blue Peter every Thursday evening

Did you watch the one where the kids were talking about how hard they worked on a Dalek replica, then Chris Eccleston comes in, destroys it and leaves?

Yeah, and he didn’t even give them a badge or anything :sob:

INTERVIEWER: Why did you want to play the Doctor?

ME: You know those smug kids bragging about their homemade Dalek? I want to show up, ignore them, destroy it and leave.

Got partway through. The truck just unloaded soldiers at Totter’s Lane. Unfortunately, I’ve got stuff to do.
