What do you do with pin badges?

Does anyone actually pin them onto things - clothes, bags?

I have a few now and am thinking of pinning them onto my new bag, but I’m afraid they will A) ruin the bag and B) fall off and I’ll be very sad.

Please tell me it’s a good idea to do this

I personally don’t pin them onto bags anymore since I lost one too many on them, but I do tend to pin them to my denim jacket (I am more aware of them there so I notice if they get too lose and might fall off). The only time I take them off is when I wear my Ace cosplay, then they get pinned to that jacket.

I have a denim jacket I pin mine onto! I buy the little secure backings for them so they don’t fall off - these are readily available online  I would say go for it!

I have a few. Also afraid to lose them so they’re just in a draw. Maybe I should get a little pain board for them?

I used to have a couple pinned to my messenger bag (which I just don’t use anymore). These days they usually go on my corkboard at work.

I think if it pins through the material, you should be okay. I used to have a little charm attached to my purse strap, which fell off on the train and broke my heart, but if memory serves it was a little clippie thing and not a pin. They do also make backpacks with clear compartments so you can pin your badges or charms to the inside and not worry about them falling off. Not that that helps you right now.

You could potentially also double-secure them with a small magnet inside the bag, dependent upon whether the badge’s back is magnetic, how thick the bag is, and how strong the magnet is.

Sticking pins to your bag will leave holes in the material, but only pin-sized. They shouldn’t cause it to unravel or anything.

I’ve got a bunch pinned to my backpacks and I pin them to my clothes for pride since most of them are pride pins. I’ve lost two or three I think but since mine are all pretty easily replaceable that’s not too bad. It’s mostly the placement on the bag that made me lose them, they’d get pushed off by my bicycle basket for example. For damage to material, my backpacks might have tiny holes but they’re not at all noticeable but I have a leather handbag with just one pin on it where the hole is very noticeable if I remove it. In general if you don’t remove and re-add them often it’s fine though, and I’ve also had some tshirts that got holes from them

Depends on the pin and depends on the bag.

Button pins have safety pin style backs, which tend to rust and get bent out of shape over time. You can always be d them back, but at that point it becomes somewhat of a chore, and I’ve lost most of mine over the years. They’re easily replaceable as they’re very cheap to make, but it still sucks.

Enamel pins usually have a point and a backing to keep the pin in place, like butterfly backed earrings. These hold up much better over time, but can’t stick to thicker fabrics like a longer, bendy safety pin can. I can’t pin any of mine on my bag due to this.

Leather and faux-leather bags, or any plastic-y materials get damaged by pins and won’t heal. It’s usually small damage, and if you plan to keep the pins in forever, it doesn’t really matter. More fabric-y materials usually won’t show damage (excluding silk and synthetic facsimiles. But I doubt you want to pin things to silk anyway). Thick materials such as laptop bags won’t hold pins of any kind; butterfly backed pins won’t go all the way through, and safety pin backed pins will get bent much quicker.

Basically, stick them in there and see if they hold. Sorry this got so long.

I got two Doctor Who pins from Forbidden Planet once and decided to put them on my bag.

One day I picked it up and they weren’t there anymore, just the little rubber nubs that held them in place.

I’m still annoyed about it, they were really expensive.

If you’re worried about them falling off your bag, you can always buy some locking backs to replace the ones they come with.

For me personally, generally any pins that I get are for wearing on my collar

I’ve got an old school jacket I really liked , but it has my old high school logo on so it feels weird to wear outside school. So I got rid of the logo and replaced it with a UNIT pin!

Thanks for all your responses!

The pins I have are all Doctor Who related, to go on my Doctor Who bag

Most are from Forbidden Planet, one is an LGBT TARDIS, I have ordered one from Friends of Ace, and another one is on order and is … top secret, for now

They are all pretty expensive and some may be irreplaceable. So perhaps I should just stick to my display board I bought. Or putting them on a jacket.

I’ll try it out, and try buying some special backs and see how it works.

Thanks!

I recently rediscovered a bunch of old badges in an old TARDIS tin.
