What do you call the Master's incarnations?

I call them all actor names with exception of war and Missy.

When I was younger and didn’t engage much with the fandom, to me the war master was “Yana Master” and I wonder if I was the only person who called him that lol.

You can imagine how that’d work out if we were doing that for Doctors. Who would get to be “The Baker Doctor”?

Christopher Baker

I mean, we do that with the Doctor too. It’s just natural when you have so many actors playing the same character.

But there’s no point doing it for the Doctor because they are all numbered or have a name, eg there’s no confusion about who the Twelfth Doctor is. Or the War Doctor.

But if you said the Tennant Doctor - is that 10? Meta Crisis? Fourteen? Now there’s confusion.

The show hasn’t given the Master such obvious numbers or names, so we have to make up a system.

But actor names doesn’t work for things like comics or books and it’s not in-universe, so use names like Saxon Master, War Master, Spy Master, etc.

I’m the opposite, I don’t see the point of having to force it to be an in-universe name when it’s perfectly easy and clear to refer to them in an out of universe way and have everyone know what you’re talking about.

Though, that’s easy to say when one is primarily TV Who fan like me.

But the thing is the characters in universe won’t refer to them as War Master, Spy Master or Tremas Master. It’s just the Master, as the Doctor is just the Doctor.

Referring to them as separate entities is out of universe motivated.

(I actually prefer the lore names too)

The second and third Doctors have lore names. :stuck_out_tongue:

DOCTOR 1: [on scanner] Ah, there you are. I seem to be stuck up here. Hmm? Hmm? Oh, so you’re my replacements. Huh. A dandy and a clown. Have you done anything?

Mostly I call them by an in-universe titel/function/description so crispy, spy, missy etc., except for Delgado and Ainley who I always call by their actor’s name

Funny enough I call them all “The Master” except for Missy, who I call “Missy”

War Master/Yana
Harold Saxon/Simm Master - I usually use the latter
Missy
Spy Master

Ten calls Eleven “Chinny”.

Eleven calls Ten “Sand shoes” and War “Grandad”.

So, we have The Clown Doctor, The Dandy Doctor, The Grandad Doctor, The Sand Shoes Doctor, and The Chinny Doctor so far. And the Valeyard, I suppose.

DId someone say Grandad???

Actually, lorewise, 1 should be “Grandfather!”, so I guess we have both a grandfather Doctor and a grandad Doctor.

And 7 can be the Professor Doctor.

I usually go by their Actors name similarly as to the Doctors at times (I know a good chunk of people who struggle a bit knowing who is which number at times, so it helps them greatly).
Besides that I only have a special name for one Master, can you guess who it is by the name: The Lex Luthor Master

Twelve is The Eyebrows.

MISSY: Doesn’t matter which face he was wearing, they’re all the Doctor to me. So let’s give it to the eyebrows.

I prefer terms that are somewhat in Universe.

Beevers is the ‘Decayed Master’
Robert’s is the ‘Morphant Master’
Mac queen is the ‘Reborn Master’

That one is a bit confusing though because that could just as well be describing the Simm Master after the ridiculous potions shenanigans in that story…
Plus the War Master talks about the Master being reborn in Utopia.
