Out of all the spin-offs we could’ve had, why haven’t we seen an adaptation of Gallifrey on TV? Like House of Cards, but with Time Lords?

Seán Carlsen needs to be on TV! We need new TV Time Lords - Narvin would be perfect.

Oh, and the other day, I was thinking about how crazy it is that Lisa Bowerman is one of the actors in the Whoniverse who’s been playing one part for the longest (25 years and counting) but has never appeared on TV!

Give Benny her own show, or bring her in as a companion!

Oh yes I was wondering why Benny has never been on TV but thought maybe it was a licensing thing.

We all know Moffat tried to recreate her by making his own time-travelling archaeologist.

()

I really liked this about her actually, I didn’t think it was boring at all. The only thing I didn’t like about how Ruby stayed in Empire of Death is actually more out of universe things. I didn’t like that there were all these rumours that Ruby would leave after a season, and that there was nothing said against them, they were not only mean, but also really deceived a lot of people, I saw many on tumblr convinced that Ruby wasn’t coming back, so I would have liked it if Empire had made it a bit clearer that this was a temporary break for her.

And the only way the stakes here were big, but that is okay for a finale, I think. I thought it removed some of the tension that every one died because that means they’ll all come back, I would have preferred for the death to remain a threat. But I loved the episode, so it’s really a minor complaint for me.

I actually feel like maybe the fifth doctor era isn’t the best way alien/non-contemporary companions were done.

I’m thinking more of Jamie and Zoe and of course Romana, my beloved. Those are more the type of companions I’d like to see more of. Or in Romana’s case, maybe come back?

Excuse me, Leela is literally perfect /hj. I feel like she needed to get some things explained but actually not that much, she is very intelligent and gets the parts that matter very quickly, even if she sees it in an unconventional way. Her skills complement the Doctor’s very well. I think the amount of explanation you need for a character that’s from a different time isn’t actually much more than for a contemporary character, they’re constantly in the future after all! So it’s all just a matter of being executed well

Actually, she has been on Doctor Who, just not as Benny! She played Karra, the Cheetah person Ace falls in love/has a strong connection with, in Survival

Oh yes, I meant specifically as Benny

I mean killed “in action” so to speak.

Living out your life until old age is hardly getting “killed”. Clara essentially became immortal after she was killed. Bill became a Cyberman, but was saved by deus ex machina space puddle from 9 episodes ago. Rose: “This is how I died”, you didn’t though…

It’s beyond “trope territory” at this point.
Vs Adric - “Now I’ll never know if I was right”. Bang! Dead! And took all the Dinos with him 65 million years ago.
Katarina - saves everyone by ejecting herself into space and suffocating.

It has waaay more impact for me with a definite conclusion. Donna in Journey’s End for example! Could you imagine how disappointing that would be if it was reversed??? Oh… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

My “complaint” with this is that Ruby had no say in the matter. It was worse than Susan.
“Please stay and let me do my thing Doctor and we’ll fly off together again” - no response.
“I love you” - Doctor turns his back on her.
He’s got a flippin’ time machine and she’s got the RTD super phone - just let Ruby give a shout when she is ready and use the TARDIS to go there. It would take you 30 seconds Doctor!

Sorry. I’m a bit sleep deprived

I really disagree with this. I like the Gallifrey series but I don’t think that Gallifrey has done great on-screen. I think that the absence of Gallifrey is one of the best things of modern Who.

I think that there is no real good way of introducing Benny on TV. How do you introduce her in a way that satisfies both the ones that know her from the audio and books and to the ones that have never heard of Big Finish?

That would be simple:

“Hi, Doctor! I’m Benny Summerfield; adventure is my name, I’m the original time-travelling archaeologist, and I’m here to have fun! Let’s go!”

“Brax says hi”

Same way you introduce Kate Stewart for people who had never heard of the Brig (except I wish they’d stop mentioning the Brig every single scene she is in - she’s her own person!)

Same way you re-explain Susan who hasn’t been in the show for decades but they talked about during the most recent season.

Just needs a little re-introduction.

How cool would it be if Benny was the series-long mystery, she was calling out to the Doctor from some far-off planet and he had to find her, thinking he was rescuing her, but actually she saves him from a trap he’s about to let off.

(Yes I like strong female companions, not damsels in distress)

Lisa Bowerman looks great for 62 and I’m not calling her an old lady but it would also be nice to have Benny join the show because she’s not in her 20s.

(I feel bad for saying this now haha)

(And yes I’m on the Benny train :steam_locomotive:)

Can you imagine a series with Fifteen + Benny + Susan.

The Ladies that Lunch through Time and Space

I think that there is a difference between Susan and Benny. It is easy to explain granddaughter and they had like 10 on-screen adventures. Kate is a new character. Sarah Jane is probably the closest but I also feel like that is easier than someone who has as much backstory as Benny.

They brought Mel back, and didn’t explain how the Doctor met her…

Yeah all Benny needs to say is she got a lift off a Zingo :joy:

This! Damsels in distress are so last century! Benny would definitely be the polar opposite!

She’s 62? Honestly, I wouldn’t have guessed. Looks no older than 40 to me!

Well they didn’t explain that in the Classic era either
