Watched The Next Doctor late last night.
I have such ambivalent feelings towards this one.
Everything with Jackson Lake and Rosita is great.
Everything with the Cybermen is utter crap.
In the end I think this is probably the best of the specials for me.
At least it’s a bunch better than what I am watching now. The Planet of the Dead…

I think that it is kind of fun even if it is not the best RTD episode. I find Next Doctor kind of predictable and I am not a fan of Jackson Lake and Rosita.

To be honest I had a lot of fun when I did the event as a whole. It was fun to try to find images of a T-shirt that had 3 sentences that were part of the story. And I am always down for a multi-doctor story.

Okay I’ve watched The Waters of Mars now.
I’ll stand by what I said with The Next Doctor being my favourite of the specials, the bits with Jackson Lake are great. It’s funny and emotional. Everything with the Cybermen in this is not good though - I don’t know whether to eyeroll harder at the CyberKing or the CyberShades, but we are nearing CyberBrig level with both.
The Waters of Mars is cool, and I tend to love a base under siege story. The Flood is a great villain and super menacing when affecting the crew. There are just some niggles with it. The “funny” robot is just not funny, plus it doesn’t seem like a type of robot that is actually useful for anything really - resources were spent to send that robot to Mars along with a controller? It seems like those bikes would be a lot more useful.
And every single time they show that computer screen with text on they do two small zooms with the same noise at both zooms. And I just think the scene where the Doctor names them all and the double zoom is made on their year of death goes on forever and amounts to very little.
Captain Adelaide Brooke is awesome.
The whole thing with the Tenth Doctor going “Time Lord Victorious” just bugs me. He had two seasons of being smug with Rose first and then condescending to Martha, then we had Donna who totally fixed all of the issues I had with this Doctor aaaaand were back to basics again now. I can see how it forms an arc for the 10th Doctor, and that this is the peak of his Hubris - it just doesn’t work for me.
Right, what comes next?
