I think that The Krotons is a bit underrated. I find it to be a kind of fun story where we can see what happens when a population becomes too reliant on one great source of knowledge. I think that there are some parallels to be made to how people treat AI today, and even if there is great knowledge, it can also mean that people miss other information. It is not the best story in the series, but I gave it a 3.5/5.

Not many Troughton stories left of this rewatch. I love him so much. What a great and fun actor he was!

That’s the next story in my rewatch!

My rewatch with new to classic Who friend is into the Hinchcliffe era, we just wrapped up The Android Invasion yesterday. Man this era is great, even the weakest ones I think are still at least ok. I wish Whitehouse didn’t get her damn hands into Doctor Who and get the man moved to other projects, I’d have loved another season or two under him and Holmes.

Halfway through my rewatch of Remembrance of the Daleks. I swear it gets better every time!

Continuing with my NuWho rewatch, I just rewatched “The Doctor, The Widow, and the Wardrobe” and “Asylum of the Daleks.” Both of those are mid, but at least “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship” is next; I have a soft spot for that episode.

Watched Planet of the Giants today! A fun little serial that nevertheless has some interesting themes. Though I did burst out laughing at the first cliffhanger being… a kitty. :black_cat:

hard not to be excited for an episode with a title like “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship,” really.

My review of “The Power of Three,” a childhood favorite that I just rewatched. The short version is that it’s an almost perfect episode, and placing a bunch of small black cubes around the school building would be an excellent senior prank, if it wasn’t for the fact that I’m one of three people at my school that would get the joke.

I watched The Sea Devils. So, it’s basically The Silurians again but with the Master involved. I thought it was quite good, there’s thrilling action (the big battle between the humans and Sea Devils may be the best action scene of Classic Who that I have seen so far), Jo gets to shine at a few points, Delgado is masterful (pun definitely intended) at his role and I loved his manipulative antics, and I really like the idea of an amphibian variation of the Silurians. The references back to The Silurians (the story) is great to include then for obvious reasons as those events tie into this story.

There are a few issues I have with this one however that keep it from being as good as The Silurians. I don’t think the Sea Devils get as good of a characterization as their land-based cousins, I think there are a few too many characters (the submarine crew and that part of the plot feels a little unnecessary) and the ending is a little lackluster.

The fact that the Doctor decides to blow the Sea Devils up feels wrong. Of course he doesn’t reach that decision immediately and he does run out of options after that idiot Walker ordered an attack, but he’s basically doing what the Brig did in The Silurians which he clearly disapproved of. And if this was the last resort, I feel like he should’ve shown more remorse about it at the end. Not to mention, how does blowing the Sea Devil base up prevent a war? Didn’t the Chief Sea Devil say they had colonies all over the globe? He may have stopped the hibernating ones in that particular base from waking up but he’s hardly created peace. Three and the Master’s escape also feels rushed as they just use the sonic to get out and then we don’t even see them find the exit via the airlock.

Jo also kinda gets shafted away by the time Three goes to confront the Sea Devils and such and then at the end I think the Master’s escape is kinda cheap. What did he just happen to have a mask of himself on hand? And he dressed that other dude up in basically a few seconds? The final issue I have is that the gluttonous bastard Walker never gets any comeuppance for being a total moron. I didn’t need him to be killed by the Sea Devils but at least have him be fired for his incompetence or have Jane Blythe get her revenge on him for pushing her around all the time. Also the soundtrack was a bit weird at times, feeling a little out of place, as well as too many whirring and beeping noises that went on for too long.

Overall, still a pretty good story that just stumbles a bit at the end: 7/10.

Finished Carnival of Monsters earlier. I’m currently on Episode 3 of Frontier in Space. I’ve always rather enjoyed this one.

Also, the President of Earth is slaying in her outfits:

I have outfit envy.

Nice review! This is a story I do like quite a bit, but definitely isn’t my favorite Pertwee story.

Fun fact (well, fun to me, at least): this is the last story I watched during my 3rd Classic watch - it took so long to finish this story due to a crazy busy life at the time that, by the time I thought about watching The Mutants, I just decided to wait until I could devote the proper energy to a rewatch.

Ended this day by finishing Disc 2 of Series 8 with The Caretaker and Kill the Moon. Oh boy.

I really, really did not like The Caretaker. 12 is totally unlikable in this episode, he really just is abrasive all the time basically, he also looks stupid with how bad he is at disguising himself, he comes across as cartoonish. I’ve already disliked the fact that Clara has refused to talk to 12 about Danny despite her many chances and it culminates in this big fight that is just not fun to watch. I get that 12 doesn’t like soldiers because the Doctor has never been that much for guns + Time War and all that but he really just comes across as overly abrasive in this episode even for being the grumpy man he is. They also try to put in comedic bits and lines in this episode which doesn’t work and it also makes several of the characters come across as relentlessly unlikable. Oh yeah and I guess there was an alien robot in this episode too? And it felt like it was just there because it’s Doctor Who. The dialogue between Clara and Danny towards the end saves this a little but otherwise… honestly might be the worst NuWho episode I’ve seen. 2/10.

At least I won’t have to see “Gareth Roberts” in the intro anymore since it’s his last TV story. His stories are mixed for me (Shakespeare Code is mid, Unicorn and the Wasp is pretty good, Planet of the Dead is pretty bad, The Lodger is pretty good, Closing Time is bad) but it’s mainly good that it’s over because as a person… well all I’ll say is I hope he steps on LEGO every time he wakes up.

Then there’s Kill the Moon which I already knew was kinda controversial and also I already knew that it’s the episode where the moon is an egg. Honestly I found the episode kinda boring than anything else. It feels like little actually happens, the two astronaut characters that aren’t Lundvik die with little characterization (and one of them is just left to die even though they could have tried to save him, what?), Courtney is there I guess (she has a few bright moments but then there’s random “funny” lines about if the TARDIS has games and Tumblr…) and… it just feels kinda dull.

There’s the whole messaging which honestly feels like the episode is trying to have its cake and eat it too. I don’t think the dilemma is 100% analogous to abortion because having an abortion doesn’t amount to the same as killing a bunch of creatures and not having an abortion typically doesn’t present a potential worldwide threat to humanity, which is why it seems strange that it seems to lean towards that with the text on the machine thing and the talk of babies and the fact that it ends up being the choice of three women… and that an opinion is gathered yet ignored. It feels like they tried to go for a “third solution” but it really doesn’t work. But what bothers me the most is how 12 just dips. Saying that “The Earth isn’t my home. The moon’s not my moon. Sorry.” is just out of character for the Doctor in general in my opinion.

Yeah this episode was bad too unfortunately but it didn’t frustrate me as much as The Caretaker did and Clara calling out 12 for his BS at the end saves it a little. 4/10.

Series 8 has been pretty mixed so far but I’m still on board.

Sorry if some of my recent comments about recent stories I’ve watched have come across negative. I will say that for Series 8 I’ve mostly enjoyed myself. There may be three episodes I’ve not liked really but one of them was still fine to watch (Robot of Sherwood). I say this because I decided to go back into the mid-80s today with The Two Doctors and I really did not like it but I don’t want to come across as being overly negative. I’ve just hit a few whammies in a row when it comes to TV stories I suppose.

The worst part is that it’s actually kind of alright for the first two parts. The overarching plot of Dastari and Chessene using the Second Doctor (who is wonderful in this one, when he gets to be himself that is…) to gain access to unlimited time travel is great. Six and Peri (and later Jamie too) picking up a trail from the space station and later to the antagonists’ base in Spain, pretty fun to watch. There’s the flaws of the bickering between Six and Peri which goes a bit overboard, but I’m fine with it so far. Chessene is a solid villain and as much as the Sontarans are a little bit shoe-horned in, I found it really interesting and fun to watch this triumvirate of villains work together while scheming for their own agendas in the background. The setting of Spain is interesting too and Six’s outfit there is wonderful.

But then come my negatives and it’s mainly to do with part three. Before that, I’ll just say that I have some smaller issues that I’ll fire off. First, Two is kinda rude to Jamie in the first episode, not even playfully teasing more just straight up harsh. I get he’s angry but it felt wrong. Then the Sontarans being tall, even though they’re supposed to be short because of the gravity of Sontar. The masks also look worse than both Linx and Styre’s from previous stories. And the biggest issue of all: Shockeye. I ■■■■■■■ HATE Shockeye. He’s annoying, one-note, gross, takes up far too much screentime and why is he even there after the villains go to Spain? Chessene is a manipulator as she later explains how she has no more use of the Sontarans so why is she bringing along this useless blob? I have nothing against John Stratton, I’m sure he was a decent guy but I hate this character so much. He seems tonally inconsistent as it feels like he’s supposed to be comedic but also a scary cannibal man and it doesn’t work for me at all.

I will rant more about him but it’ll be as part of my discussion on part three. Part three really just ruins the story for me. There’s Shockeye stealing away Peri and making me feel like I’m watching The Texas… or I guess in this case The Andalusian Chainsaw Massacre, which I don’t like because this is Doctor Who. Then Chessene turns around and wants to turn Two into an Androgum instead of the original plan for some reason that makes no sense whatsoever. This then leads into a pointless and annoying sidetracking of the story into all the other characters chasing Shockeye and Androgum Two down to Seville, I really hated having to watch Troughton be this stupid silly character instead of being more of his actual character. And then they are just brought back to the hacienda anyway…

We get back there and Six and Two work together to free themselves and to save Jamie, good, enjoyed that scene. Dastari stops Peri and Two to kill them. Then when the others get down there, he has from nowhere turned a page. WHAT? So now he’s the misunderstood scientist led astray by his own creation? Yeah no, I’m not buying it for a second, bad. He dies, Chessene dies and it’s the end after Six and Two exchange a few quips.

I’ll comment on the violence too. Attack of the Cybermen’s crushed hands were a little bit out there but not too bad in my opinion. Vengeance on Varos wasn’t that bad either in my opinion, minus the acid bath. This one really goes too far though. I don’t need to see a Sontaran’s blown-off leg in Doctor Who and the murder of Oscar was just way too dark and out of the blue, just mean-spirited. I thought Oscar and Anita were nothing special at first but did grow to like them. The cyanide suffocation is also definitely grim, but honestly since Shockeye was such a monster he deserved it and I didn’t have to deal with him in the story anymore so I can look past it. The whole idea that the Androgums are complete savages by nature and that even “fixing” them won’t stop their instincts also doesn’t sit right with me.

In my head for the first two episodes I was thinking that this could still be a decent story overall, but this third part really did not work for me at all and it feels like it really adds too much to the runtime. It’s around 2 hours and 15 minutes but feels longer than a traditional 6-parter (which is about 2 hours and 30 minutes).

Now, Colin does his best and he has some good moments, so does Nicola Bryant as well despite the bickering. Patrick and Frazer do their best too and are quite enjoyable. Two is great when he’s strapped to the wheelchair in the basement, trying desperately to get free and worrying that Jamie might be dead. Unfortunately it doesn’t save this story which ends up as a bit of a trainwreck.

As negative as I have been, it doesn’t go as low or lower than The Web Planet, which got a 2/10. The first two episodes being enjoyable saves it by a little. It’s still a pretty grisly 3/10 though. Sorry.

I love Shockeye. I thought he was hilarious as was the androgum shtick and episode three with him and Two playing Anthony Bourdain.

I’m always surprised when I hear people say they don’t like T2D because I find it to be the kind of lighthearted/unserious story I wish Classic Who did more, but horses for courses.

I just don’t buy it being lighthearted when you’ve got a character continuously trying to butcher people for food (and also killed and ate a raw rat on-screen), the dismembered leg of a Sontaran shown off (green blood is still blood), and an innocent man being stabbed to death in a grim manner. I mean yes there is a level of ridiculousness to some of these things, but I don’t think that works when you have the other really dark moments. I don’t buy Shockeye (excuse a few seconds of internal screaming) being simultaneoously the bumbling gluttonous buffoon and the cannibalistic (okay he’s not a human but he basically looks the same, it’s traditional DW “aliens”) killer who carries a giant machete-like knife with him at all times.

If you like the story, good for you. I’m glad people get something out of what I don’t get anything out of. It just really didn’t work for me. But as said, that’s mainly because of part three. Parts one and two are decent enough really.
