Still enjoying The Blood Cell. The reveal that The Governor was the former president rules! And I really liked his flashback.

Buuuuut I think the way it’s been revealed that the current homeworld party are failing and are the ones sabotaging the prison is a little too expositiony for my liking.

Finished Intelligence Taskforce. It’s a very good part 2 to the first book (yes a part 2 that isn’t a letdown, it happens). These two books provided a good amount of background on the resistance that had prevented UNIT being set up earlier, and I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say this is where that resistance is finally overcome. I would have liked a little more of the book devoted to showing that happen, but still… a nice job concluding the events set up in United Nations.

I started reading The Highest Science but just could not get into it. I decided instead to go for another Benny book, so I’m abandoning all sense and reason, and reading them in the wrong order - it’s now The Infernal Nexus for me!

I just find these books easier to read than the VNAs, and I love Benny now :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

(But River is still superior - adding this because otherwise people might think I’ve been replaced with an Auton duplicate, what with the out-of-order stuff and all).

Controversial but I really don’t like The Highest Science!

Quite right

Over the last few days I read/listened to the audiobook of City of Death. Absolutely excellent book, I highly recommend it, it does the humor and tone so very well and is overall a very fun experience

Now reading Ship of Fools, its pretty fun so far. Dave Stone’s writing seems to be more mixed with people but I quite like it

Dave Stone is extremely hit or miss for me. I can love his work or I can strongly dislike it! At his best he’s brilliant, though.

I’vd started reading Star Tales alongside Missy Chronicles!

I feel exactly the same. I’m struggling through The Mary-Sue Extrusion at the moment and I really don’t like the fact he’s being wilfully obscure. Five chapters (and supplemental bits in between) in and I still have no idea who the main character is that I’m reading about!

(I’m starting to think maybe it’s Jason but I’m not 100% sure and it’s really annoying me). Thankfully it’s a short book so I’m going to force myself to read it as quickly as possible.

Finished ‘The Scarlet Empress’ (EDA #15). I think I read it wrong, somehow. There was a lot to like in this one, but something didn’t click for me, and I can’t put my finger on what it was exactly. Maybe it was just doing too much…?

That’s how I feel about Spare Parts. Personally I adoreeeeed Scarlet Empress but sometimes one just doesn’t vibe with a story even if one can see that it’s good, no matter what the public opinion is

I felt exactly the same way. If it helps, I enjoyed The Blue Angel and Mad Dogs and Englishmen much more.

Finished The Blood Cell! The prose was great, I loved the first person perspective and how it affected our viewings of events, and for the most part I think Capaldi and Coleman’s voices were written well (though at points they became fairly generic, which makes sense as it was an early book in the era).

Main criticism is the pacing is… weird. Almost half the book is mystery set up, and then exposition, and then in the last 50 pages if that it’s the climax and it all goes by really fast after a prolonged set up. Wish it was 300-350 pages so that way the second half could breathe as much as the first, or be closer to 200 with the first half trimmed.

Still, enjoyed it overall! 4/5

Right, time to go and struggle through another chapter of The Mary-Sue Extrusion. Has anyone else read this? Please tell me it’s worth the effort (and whether it’s Jason or not!).

I really enjoyed what I read of Reading the Saints, but I’ve run out of time on it[1]. I also have other things to read. I read another volume of Green Arrow comics right after supper and now settle down start the new DWM comic collection “Monstrous Beauty”. After that, I have The Church on Ruby Road novel.
