Oh I love that one :star_struck: magical realism done beautifully and some fantastic characterisation of Eight!

It’s SUCH a good book and one of my favourite vampire stories just in general

Read the latest Star Wars comic collection The Path of Light and DC Rebirth Green Arrow Volume 1 The Death and Life of Oliver Queen last night. The Star Wars one was fine. Good art and some interesting art, but not necessarily an outstanding finale to the current run. The Green Arrow comics are ones I’d read before, back when I first discovered Arrow (the TV show). I enjoyed the story, though for a Volume 1 there were little pieces of backstory (like why Oliver and Diggle weren’t on speaking terms) that I felt I was missing[1]. That said, the story was enjoyable enough and easy enough to follow. The art isn’t excatly my preferred style, but it’s still readable.

  1. I find that this is a common problem with Marvel and DC where you pick up a Volume 1 and feel completely lost ↩︎

By the way, I finished Origin Stories.

Still making my way through Slow Decay (god it’s good), decided I’m going to verge off of Torchwood after finishing it though (the books seem to have been released in sets of three, so seems a good place to stop for a bit)

Instead, I’m going to dive into some PROBE, because ■■■■ it, why not

I can think of some reasons. But I wish you good luck instead!

Also realising we dont’ have a PROBE thread, I should get on that

Deceit. Reading it slowly, it’s not one I’m feeling a lot right now.

I keep getting distracted from the books I’m reading. I’m “stuck” halfway through both the VNA “Strange England” and “The Wonderful Doctor of Oz”.

“Strange England” because of something that happened in the book shudders.

“The Wonderful Doctor of Oz” because I feel like nothing is happening in the book. I literally dropped my e-book reader on my face yesterday and I wasn’t even that tired…

So I ended up reading the pre-millenium Abslom Daak stuff :person_shrugging:
“Emperor of the Daleks” by Paul Cornell was excellent :+1:

Finished this last night, really enjoyed The Crystal in the Crater. It’s basically Chris just talking to a therapist for a story but is so good

Really quite enjoyed United Nations and looking forward to Intelligence Taskforce. I’ve really enjoyed the Lethbridge-Stewart series, and I like the way it’s (I assume) working its way to the formation of UNIT. There are some seeds towards that in this book, and indeed much of that is carrying on from some of the preceding books. Really hoping we get to actually see those seeds germinate in the second book.

I wouldn’t recommend the L-S books to all Who fans, but personally I’m really glad I got into them (even if getting hold of them without spending a fortune on shipping has frequently been a challenge).

Not Doctor Who related at all, but I’m currently reading Judgement at Tokyo which is about the Asian equivalent of the Nuremberg Trials.

Once i finish that, it’s onto Goth Opera, probably. Although i do have a collected edition of every Sherlock Holmes book calling my name

Interesting. I’m familiar enough with Nuremberg, but I’ve never heard of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East. Don’t remember ever hearing of a war crimes tribunal for Japanese leaders.

Finished my latest EDA, Hope, last night. Some good moments but it deals with some complex sci-fi questions way too simply. Still a decent read, and Anji’s actions and choices in this story anticipate Clara’s ‘betrayal’ at the end of series 8 rather nicely.

Got a couple manga volumes I need to read first over next few days but then after that I’ll finally start my copy of The Blood Cell that I’ve owned pretty much since it came out 11 years ago but haven’t read :rofl:

That’s the next EDA on my list! I’ll take “decent read” as a win tbf, because not all of them manage to reach that bar

I know I won’t shut up about this book, but I love it so much!

Hope you enjoy!

The “73 Yards” novelisation is a bit of a weird one.
The first half just follows everything happening in the episode, well written but a bit dull.
Then comes some amazing chapters after Ruby was locked out by Carla. Meeting Ace, knowing that Cherry refused to change her will and kept Ruby in her will, hearing an account of Ruby’s thoughts during those 20 years until she decided to go against Roger ap Gwilliam were definitely the highlights of this book.
And then around the “stadium scene” it feel like it goes back to the word-for-word approach.

I don’t think I fully “get” this story, I can’t really see the appeal of it and there’s so many unanswered questions that for me would need at least some conclusions in order to form a compelling narrative.
And I want to be able to see that which makes so many folks love this story.

I think this one is a 3/5 :star: for me, just a bit higher than the televised story :slightly_smiling_face:
