That is a lot of reading!
Just finished “Blood Heat” by Jim Mortimore yesterday and has gone straight into “The Dimension Riders” by Daniel Blythe. I am really into the Virgin New Adventures at the moment
I enjoyed Blood Heat - read a lot of it in my back garden in the sun many years ago. The Dimension Riders…was fine.
I tend to have 2-3 books going on at the same time, plus audio dramas (and podcasts). But my reading goes through periods; sometimes there are two or three months where I don’t read anything at all.
In the process of a full timeline marathon so I am currently reading Ten Little Aliens, which sure is an experience to read for the first time. I keep rotating between reactions of “oh this is great,” “oh, this is a train crash I can’t look away from,” and “oh I hate this.” I am genuinely curious where this last 100 pages takes me and where I will land on it.
Oh! Let us know how it goes
I’m currently reading Timewyrm Genesys with the Book Club
Moriarty: The Hound of the D’Urbervilles. A fun Sherlock Holmes pastiche by Kim Newman.
Have you read Time and Relative, his Doctor Who novella? What did you think?
Too much! For fun, it’s The Accidental, by Ali Smith (one of my favourite authors). I’m up to The Adventuress of Henrietta Street on my EDA marathon, so giving that a bit of a rest for now. I’m currently (as in procrastinating as I write) annotating (and reading) El alcalde de Zalamea (The Mayor of Zalamea), a 17th century Spanish play by Pedro Calderón de la Barca for my studies.
I haven’t. But will add it to my list.
It’s one of my favorite Who novels ever. I loved it so much I went out and bought Anno Dracula for more of his writing.
It is so bizarre. I don’t think I simultaneously loved and despised a segment of a book as much as I did during the “Choose Your Own Adventure” chapter. It also did the thing I hate in whodunits where information was deliberately withheld and then the actual villains came out of nowhere. Overall it’s… fine? Characterization of One, Ben, and Polly is outstanding and you really come to care for some of the space marine characters. If you’re looking for a solid whodunit with a side order of body horror then by all means, read it.
I’ve just started So Vile a Sin the other night, finally! And so far, nearly 70 pages in, it’s incredible, much better than I dared hope (I wasn’t a fan of either of the authors’ previous book in the series). Thus far it’s continuing the streak of blew-me-away quality in the VNAs that I felt with The Death of Art and Damaged Goods, which I’m especially loving after a prolonged period of novels I’ve felt were mostly either extremely mixed in quality (The Also People, Happy Endings, Christmas on a Rational Planet, Return of the Living Dad), middle-of-the-road (Warchild, Sleepy), or outright poor (Head Games, Shakedown)—albeit with a few standouts I really enjoyed (Just War, Death and Diplomacy, GodEngine)
SVAS is perhaps my favourite VNA. An absolute tour de force from two of the range’s greatest authors, deftly carrying its momentum with apt time for cool sci-fi ideas (with executions that stick the landing!) and an awareness of everything.
I love the VNAs because of how different fans can be. Kate Orman’s my favourite Who writer ever (her lowest book for me is 8/10!), whilst I really didn’t like stuff like The Death of Art… The Also People is a 10/10 for me too!
Is your username from Parasite by any chance?
I’m currently reading:
As with BF audios I tend to bounce around different books, though I do mean to have a proper Eight chronological read-through at some point, and then Seven VNAs/BBCs.
So far I’m loving the Missy-Does-Oz novel, and it’s making me itch to read more 13 novels.
I’m also reading The Secret in Vault 13 with my 7yo, which is just loads of fun.
I’m also reading The Wonderful Doctor of Oz right now! Definitely recommend checking out other 13 novels, I’ve found them all to be a lot of fun. And if your kid likes The Secret in Vault 13 you should definitely also read The Maze of Doom with them!
Why yes it is! Parasite is one of my all-time favorites in the series, I love it so much!! It’s a fun surprise that somebody picked up on that!
Parasite and Sky Pirates! are my top two VNAs at the moment, I think. There’s so many that are close though (including Original Sin and Damaged Goods), it’s a fantastic series!
I also enjoy hearing about different people’s opinions on Doctor Who books!
Ooo excellent, will do!
I find the VNA Dimension Riders a bit slow so took a couple of days of from that and read Guy Adams’ “Class” book Joyride.
While fast-paced it did read as a bit too much generic sci-fi with some splatter-gore added for good measure (it is Class after all). The relationship between the main characters felt a bit off. The worst thing about it though is that it didn’t have enough Quill
