Started Trial of the Valeyard - so brilliant so far. Hilarious and great riffing off of Trial of my a Time Lord. Already got a couple of great quotes.
When I think of Leeds (my home-city) I don’t necessarily think of the local accent being anything like Dorian Pavus’ voice, but I’ll take the assumption as a compliment.
(Now on to ‘A Kill to a View’)
Listened to “Beyond the Doctor - The Kairos Ring”.
It was fine, Stephen Gallagher captures the same tone he used in The Warrior’s Gate. I think this is one of those stories where you have to be “in the mood” to enjoy it 100% - I kind of want to read the short story version from the Warrior’s Gate and Beyond novelisation and see if it get more out of it since I really like The Warrior’s Gate on the Tele.
A 3,5/5
Con: Romana didn’t say “The Back Blast Backlash will Bounce Back and destroy everything!”
A story all about Bessie next? I’m intrigued
Now that is a good Torchwood story. Hope you have fun with it.
Listening to “Beyond the Doctor - Bessie Come Home”.
I’m am almost halfway through.
It’s… ever so slightly… boring?
And what is it about Paul Margs and giving inanimate objects sentience?
(Although can you call a car an inanimate object when it’s function is to move? )
I did not like that story. I was a fun idea but it was boring.
I took a break from it for a while. Now there’s 25 minutes left… …
It’s just a car (I love that car btw) that’s gained sentience somehow? telling all the Third Doctor’s adventures from the perspective of a car…
It’s just a really drawn out audio version of this show:
There. Done with "Bessie Come Home.
It has a rating of 3,96/5
What am I not seeing in this story?
It is really weird how hit-or-miss Paul Margs’ writing is for me.
The next story in this set, “London, 1965”, that I listened to yesterday, I gave a 4,5/5 . It was excellent. This one sits comfortably at a 1/5
in my book.
“Sleeper Agents” about Ben and Polly is next.
It’s read by Anneke Wills, so it already has that going for it
Suddenly I’m not as excited to listen to these anymore
Woah now I won’t hear anything against Brum I love that guy (?)
About to finish CDNM5 with Five Hundred Ways to Leave Your Lover, I was quite disappointed with the last episode but this one’s very promising so far
I have had the audiobook sitting in my library for ages, maybe it’s time for me to finally listen to it… I’m usually a huge Magrs fan so I’m hopeful about it
You won’t hear a bad word about Brum from me
But that other lovely yellow car, Bessie, gaining sentience and reading plot synopses is quite boring…
Listened to ‘The Spirit Trap’ in a very long queue today. Probably my favourite J&L story so far.
The ‘Free Speech’ short trip was nothing special, but nice.
Finished Trial of the Valeyard whilst washing the car and walking to the supermarket and back.
Absolutely delightful. Scary to think this came out for the 50th and we’re not past the 60th before I listened to it! So sad that we’ve lost Lynda Belligham and Michael Jayston since then. It was interesting to hear the Inquisitor in a pre-Gallfrey (the series) time with Bellingham giving little hints of where Darkel, as a character, would end up. It did seem like some effort was made to have a bit of progression from the Trial version of the Inquisitor to the Gallifrey version.
Loved all the little nods to Trial and also the early days of the series (the ‘nothing at the end of the lane’ reference was especially lovely).
Very enjoyable.
Listened to The Krillitane Relic. It was rather disappointing after the first Krillitane episode– does almost nothing with the Krillitane having taken the form of Zoe, instead just killing time until the action breaks out.
Nice to hear Ray again though. I hope we get the whole boxset with her that’s been hinted at (and I’m not just saying that to appease @deltaandthebannermen! ).
Listened to The Crimes of Thomas Brewster. I found the story itself kinda meh and still don’t like Brewster but it was fun to have Evelyn, Menzies and Flip together in a story
Finished “Beyond the Doctor - Sleeper Agents” just now.
Another really good story. A 4/5 I’d say. Ben and Polly are a delightful duo! And this story is really well narrated by Anneke Wills.
I am now a bit intrigued to see how the little overarching plot of these stories end up in the last one, The Penumbra Affair. But that’ll have to wait until tomorrow. Time for a spot of reading
