Well I’m just trying to 100% the Eighth Doctor, I really enjoy his performances.
I agree some Time War stories are a little boring, but Cass and Reflections are far less about the war, hardly a Dalek in sight, they are more about timey wimey affects of Time War weapons and such, it’s fun!
Slight spoiler but we haven’t actually learned that reason yet except that it involves timey wimey and possibly alternate realities? Although it’s confusing, I may have got that last bit wrong.
I think it’s been done to death by now, and so many of the stories in the various ranges are generic at best and full of pointless shouty daleks which doesn’t help. It would be nice to see slightly less of it, but I guess it must be popular bc they keep on doing it
Yeah - the Daleks aspect puts me off because - controversial opinion alert - I find the Daleks immensely boring; especially on audio! There are a few Dalek stories I like but on the whole none of them even shuffle close to my top 50, let alone top 10.
Hard same, very few stories do anything actually interesting with them and in the Time War stuff they turn into shouty generic Enemies and it’s a little dull. Plus too much Dalek yelling is quite unpleasant to listen to
I’ve mostly enjoyed the recent Eighth Doctor stories but I can completely understand the aversion to bringing Cass ‘back’ (ie having her travel as an actual companion prior to the events of Night of the Doctor).
I can’t shake that myself to be honest. Even though I’ve enjoyed the episodes I still wish it hadn’t actually been Cass.
I probably shouldn’t respond to @deltaandthebannermen’s original question, as I stopped keeping up with Big Finish about a decade ago, and have nothing later than 2018 (I think). I have no knowledge of their Time War releases, but I can see where Time War stuff would start to get tiresome after a time, if they couldn’t really do anything new and interesting with it. And I’m not the biggest fan of Daleks, so they’re not a big selling point for me either.
I’m generally of the opinion that the Time War is something best left to the imagination with small glimpses from time to time (sorry, no pun intended). The reference in The End of Time, I believe that goes something like “The Horde of Travesties. The Nightmare Child. The Could-Have-Been King with his army of Meanwhiles and Neverweres” - suggesting something cool without trying to explain it, I feel like that works best.
Anyway, why did I quote @ChrisStokes’s post? Because this sounds like the kind of jump-the-sharkiness that makes it really hard to buy into what they’re doing.
Still, like I said, I’m a BF dropout, so I’m poorly positioned to comment. It really depends on whether it’s working for you guys, or if it’s overload at this point.
I will say, on the “shouty dalek” front, the last couple of 8th Doctor Time War sets have been avoiding them. The Daleks are only in 1 story in “Cass,” and even then their presence is incedental, with the story being more about the threat of them in the abstract, rather than a generic invasion story. They don’t show up in “Reflections” at all. I’m not even sure they’re mentioned by name
As for Cass herself, we don’t know how that will play out because the story is literally ongoing. That said, we have had multiple instances of time being rewritten around her to prevent her from meeting the Doctor, that’s kind of a major part of “Reflections.” By the end of this set she’s already fuzzy and uncertain about how exactly she met the Doctor. It’s not difficult to imagine an eventual finale where they’re tragically separated by a rewritten timeline, ending with the Doctor searching for her, leading into Night of the Doctor. And I don’t see a problem with that
I actually really like her, she has a wonderful soothing voice for audio and has been a lot of fun.
I can excuse any and all of Big Finish’s timey wimey stuff in Time War because a lot of it can’t be remembered or is rewritten and never happened - it’s an excuse to do experimental and weird stories which I absolutely love!
Yep, Reflections is a Dalek-free box set, there is a different enemy who is developing / testing time-based weapons for the Time War so it’s pretty fresh and interesting I think!
Plus there’s Alex, the Doctor’s great-grandson. Lots of character moments and development. It’s been my favourite series of Time War that I’ve listened to so far.
Um, what else can I say about it? Hmm… Honestly, just didn’t find it interesting. It’s a Companion Chronicle that has Jamie traveling with the Sixth Doctor. I had a hard time remembering that, as I didn’t feel any sense of Sixie’s character and for what little part of the story he was included, I couldn’t help but picture Pat.
I know this release ties to the main range stories that had Frazer alongside Colin, but this story, on its own, doesn’t seem to need the unusual pairing. I know the main range series references this and it is, in fact, part of the larger narrative, but by itself…without also listening to the main range releases…I just found it a bog standard monster story with no interesting surprises.
