Vworp, Vworp, Hello

I’m a big fan of television show openings from back in the day. When I was a boy, I used to beg my family to keep quiet while I tape-recorded theme tunes on my cassette player. While my friends were getting into Pink Floyd, I was listening to the themes from The Tomorrow People and The Prisoner. Season one of Space: 1999 had a particularly good opening and theme. It saddens me that so many modern TV shows don’t bother with proper openings and themes. It’s a lost art.

Speaking of audios, I highly recommend the Big Finish take on Space: 1999. There are elements to it that I think are actually better than the original television series. I do hope they continue making it.

As much as I adore The Time Tunnel, I’m the first to admit that it’s dated very badly. It’s also very silly towards the end, when they start recycling props and costumes from Lost in Space. I can’t help but love The Time Tunnel though, warts and all, which I suppose is the very definition of true love. Through my adult eyes I can see ALL the faults, yet whenever I watch an episode I turn back into that five year old kid who watched the series on Tuesday nights, at 6.15pm on BBC 1, back in 1968.

I do always like a good tv opening. The Prisoners was classic, too, retelling how #6 got there over and over. Timeless show, honestly. Sapphire & Steel’s opening was a good one, too.

Of course, some shows still have good openings. I really like what Star Trek: Prodigy did with their opening, for example.

And believe me, I’m watching classic Doctor Who, and the last serial I watched was The Reign of Terror, so I’m good with outdated, low budget visuals.

I’ll keep Big Finish’s take on Space: 1999 in mind, but it’s been so long I’d really better rewatch some of the show first. I think the last time I watched it, it was set in the future…

Not all of them. Eye of the Scorpion is one of my favorites. I was more stating the general consensus of the forum than my views specifically. It seems that most of the individuals commenting on the early Fifth Doctor monthly adventures haven’t been overly enthusiastic about them.

I’m with you @Doctor_Roo on loving the old TV but my era is probably more tuned into the 70s and 80s and definitely more of the UK stuff - Blake’s 7, Sapphire and Steel, The Tomorrow People, The Prisoner and Quantum Leap, but I also love a lot of the 90/00s stuff like Sliders, Red Dwarf, Farscape, Buffy etc all of which I have on VHS or DVD (and have hardly watched! With it all sitting there ready for a rewatch).

My eldest is working their way through lots of the retro stuff - they’ve done all of Red Dwarf and are currently doing Blake’s 7.

I think The Tomorrow People is the only show you (delta) mentioned that I haven’t seen at least one episode of…

The Tomorrow People is…interesting. There are some pretty good episodes but it is very definitely aimed at children far more than Doctor Who is and is very very very Seventies in its aesthetic. Some of the acting is pretty iffy too.

But if you want to see Peter Davison in a curly blonde wig, naked from the waist up doing a very iffy American accent…well The Tomorrow People is the show for you…

Apologies to @Doctor_Roo for hijacking his Intro thread!

We probably need a ‘General genre TV discussion thread’…

Well, a warm welcome to you, @Doctor_Roo, and great to have you here!

What a lovely introduction post and further discussion! Really puts things into perspective; I’ve always been interesting about hearing from fans who have been around since the beginning (or nearly the beginning) of the show. As someone who was born in the middle of the Wilderness Years into a country where Doctor Who was virtually unheard of until the 50th anniversary, it’s always great to hear how things were in the good old days! I can tell you are a passionate fan of 60s and 70s sci-fi, so I hope to learn a lot from you

Also, I checked out your blog! It looks interesting; I’ll be sure to follow it regularly from now on.

Oh, don’t worry, I enjoy that newfangled 1980s and '90s sci-fi and Telefantasy too. I loved V, Quantum Leap and Sliders. I’m currently engaged in a rewatch of Stargate SG1, which is another great favourite of mine. (I’d better start talking about Doctor Who soon or I’ll be getting kicked off the forum).

Thank you for the kind words, MrColdStream. I look forward to chatting more.

No danger of that (or I’d have kicked myself off the forum ages ago  ). My wife was a big Stargate fan but I never really got into it.

Welcome @Doctor_Roo! I’m always delighted when someone older than me joins the forum! I’m eight years younger than Doctor Who and I can’t really remember a time when it wasn’t a massive influence on my life. It’s good to have you around. Your memories of much of Season 5 and of the Space Pirates could prove to be hugely valuable!

Thanks, Mindfog. I do have some memories of watching The Space Pirates when it was first broadcast and will be more than happy to share them.

Excellent! Thank you. It will be nice to fill in some of the gaps that the recons and audio can’t quite reach.
