Updates on "The War Between the Land (Parasites) and the Sea (Devils)"

Oh yeah, I have seen that cover before :slightly_smiling_face:
Not a range of audios I’ve gotten into, wasn’t really blown away by the first set/season.

They’re alright, nothing groundbreaking. I’ve heard all bar the last 3 sets (funny they do an arc and I’m behind when arcs are all I rave abt with BF :sob:)

You’re not missing much  it was fine but not amazing

I was just thinking about this, and I realised that it would actually be impossible for TV writers to respect the canon of Big Finish.

First of all, Big Finish do lots of stories in between episodes and so they can now never do a “Kate meets alien X for the first time” on TV because they’ve already done them all. So for a TV-only viewer, which for the BBC has to come first, they’d miss out on so much context it forces them to buy the audios, which they can’t do.

But more importantly it’s actually impossible because Big Finish keep adding stuff into their past.

Take The Night of the Doctor. A time where they explicitly mention Eight’s audio companions:

DOCTOR: Charley, C’Rizz, Lucie, Tamsin, Molly. Friends, companions I’ve known, I salute you. And Cass, I apologise. Physician, heal thyself.

What’s wrong with this? Well he doesn’t mention Liv and Helen, who he probably travelled with longer than the others, or Audacity or Bliss or even his own great-grandson Alex!

What was a great moment at the time now seems really weird how he misses out some of the most important characters.

So because Big Finish continue to add stories in the gaps, the TV show will always be weirdly out of sync if they ever try to respect the canon.

Just my thoughts!

That’s really well put. As much as I love a tidy canon I’ve long since accepted that Doctor Who can never have one. So, in my head, every story both is and isn’t canon; everything has and hasn’t happened because time and the universe are in constant flux.

They all went evil so he hates them now lol

My favourite explanation for the TNOTD inconsistency is that he got amnesia and forgot about all his companions except Charley, C’rizz, Lucie, Tamsin and Molly. This is the 8th Doctor, after all…

And it works both ways - why doesn’t 5 remember Oliver or Erimem or Naomi Cross or any companion created after the mind scan thingy scene in Resurrection of the Daleks (but then he also forgets Leela so…)

Well obviously he doesn’t mention Fitz, Anji, Sam, Trix, Izzy, Benny, Stacy, Ssard, Gemma, Samson and more :nerd:  That’s what’s wrong with it!

But yeah it does feel a bit clunky having him not mention at the least Liv or Helen. You could explain the others as not having travelled with him too long (Audacity, after all he probably only mentioned Tamsin SPOILERS FOR THE AUDIOS because of her tragic Fate) or Time War Amnesia. (I don’t know if that exist, but it’s 8, so it probably does for him, lol).

He just likes some companions more than others.

I like the theory that it’s just the ones with tragic ends that he names

That would have required Moffat to have a time machine because Liv didn’t become a companion until 2014, and Helen joined in 2015. Like any real fan would know (and I haven’t even listened to those sets)

Oh yeah, I probably worded it weirdly, I meant to say, in hindsight it does feel a bit clunky. Obviously, at that time it wasn’t properly possible.

That was my point! And why it is impossible to keep canon with Big Finish.

Did you not read my post?! :point_up_2: go read it again young man
