I like this episode because Owen Harper is unhappy in the end. That should happen more often

I’m not a massive fan of this.

My favourite Torchwood episode of the first series. I love that there’s no villain, no monster, no grand plan; just three people adapting to life in a world they didn’t grow up in.

John’s story is absolutely heartbreaking.

The Captain’s Blog for this episode is Ianto being slightly disturbed about Jack and another man dying in his car and asking which corpse was in the driver’s seat, to keep in mind for when he next cleans out his car.

And that’s all I really think about.

A lot of Torchwood stories are about culture shock, and this might be my favourite example of that. The entire supermarket scene lives rent free in my head; there’s just something so genuine about going right from the wonder of automatic doors… to the price of bananas.

It’s the levity that makes the genuinely sad moments sit a bit easier. John makes me well up just from remembering him, and as much as I dislike Owen, I can relate with him in future episodes: If I somehow lost Louise Delamere, I’d go spare too.

One of the highlights of the first two seasons.

Okay, so based on the average rating and the above comments, this might be a hot take: I don’t find this episode particularly interesting. It’s not bad per se, just forgettable and boring. The Owen stuff is cringe. The John stuff is powerful though. Gwen is just there. Tosh isn’t there at all.

So it’s a 5/10 for me.

Out of Time brings an interesting premise but fumbles it with sluggish pacing, underdeveloped characters, and a lack of tension. Despite one powerful emotional scene between John and his elderly son, most of the story drifts along aimlessly, failing to fully explore its potential. Watchable but ultimately forgettable, this is Torchwood on autopilot.

A highlight of the season for me, up there with Catherine Tregenna’s other episodes; I love the balance struck between silly and heartbreaking.

There’s a lot I really like about the episode, some things I don’t love as well. On the whole, it’s a thumbs up, but in a sad way. I wonder if that makes any sense.

I remember liking this more than I did on my rewatch of it. I love the scene in the supermarket, and I think that the concept is great. It is just that the stories are not good enough, especially Gwen’s and Owen’s. Gwen’s story is forgettable, and Owen’s is just about sex. Jack’s story is great. I changed my rating from 4.5 to a 4, but even that might be high.

This is definitely one of my favourite and very much a comfort episode for me. It has funny moments and heartbreaking moments and joyous moments. I do wish the sex scene was a little shorter, though.

Yeah, I felt very uncomfortable through that whole scene.
