TV Club: Torchwood - Everything Changes

So I want to start watching Torchwood, but I know there is quite a bit of gore in the series.

Just wondering how bad it is, because I don’t want to get too put off the series. I’m fine with gore and stuff, so long as it isn’t constant throughout the show.

Also I may have been spoiled so I know everyone who dies in the series already :sob:

Yay, Torchwood time! Everyone knows this is my favourite show. I will say, I wasn’t sure about this first episode. I think it’s a solid introduction, but I don’t love Gwen as a main character. She did grow on me later, though. I also binged this whole show at once (only took me four days) and once I was done I did it all over again. I love this show! I should probably rewatch the episode to get my thoughts in order, because right now I’m just going !!! in my brain instead of having any coherent thoughts.

Some episodes are more gorey than others. A lot of it is quick enough to look away without missing anything and a lot of it is pretty bad CGI. You should definitely be fine for this first episode. I’ll try to make timestamps for the more gorey episodes so you know when to look away once we get to those with the club.

OK, I was thinking it might be like that.

Everything Changes is a decent episode that does its job of introducing characters and themes ect, but it’s nothing revolutionary like some of the later episodes in the series

That’s not a bad opinion at all!!!

This episode is a really good introduction to the show and characters, especially to Gwen and Jack, no matter how much you’ve seen of him in doctor who. The plot is relatively easy with some good twists. Gwen figuring it all out is really interesting to see and the whole episode is made well

Same, I also prefer the first two. To me season three and four are just too realistic. Don’t get me wrong, they’re very well made and achieve that very well, but I prefer tv shows that are a bit less so? I just don’t like it when I feel like the things could happen in real life too easily, it just freaks me out a little

For sure I agree - CoE is amazing but it’s not what I’m 100% looking for in my DW. I’m glad it was made but I’d rather watch s1 or 2 any day

I did a rewatch and enjoyed the first episode more than I remembered. The mystery with Torchwood is set up well, and Gwen is interesting enough. Overall, it’s a pretty good start to the series.

However, I still can’t believe they play Owen’s drugging and sexual assault for laughs. This is also something that never faces any consequences.

Although you’re right he didn’t face any consequences, it was kind of a montage that all the Torchwood staff took home an alien artefact and used it in their own lives. I saw it as a shorthand to show how flawed they all are.

You’re definitely not supposed to necessarily like these characters, at least not yet…

I know but the other do it because they are curious about the tools he does it because he wants to have sex with people who don’t want to have sex with him. I am sorry there is no coming back from that for me.

The thing is I still like Gwen in this episode. My dislike for her is coming later in the series.

So I recently rewatched Series 1 of Torchwood this year after previously watching most of it back in 2010/2011. Back then, I’d had no clue what it was and only knew it had Captain Jack in it who I’d enjoyed in Series 1. This time, I knew what I was getting into. So, here’s my post on Eveything Changes:

This truly is a great start to the series! It sets the tone, introduces the characters and basic premise, and shows just how serious it can be while still clearly belonging in the same universe as Doctor Who. Eve Myles snd John Barrowman are great of course and Burn Gorman is always entertaining. Nice bit of twist there with Suzie at the end.

The stuff with Owen and the love drug gas thing is pretty dubious, but doesn’t affect my general enjoyment.

I rewatched this earlier today for the club, and the main thing I noted that I wanted to mention is that I absolutely love how you can read Jack as being so subtly manipulative in this.

I headcanon that Jack personally set up the circumstances for all members of TW3 to join the team that we see in Fragments (except Ianto), and I think you can absolutely read what he does in this story as that.

In the opening scene as they’re clearing the area, he notices Gwen watching, then looks around, and intentionally looks up, seemingly to check that no-one’s watching them from above, but you could also absolutely read it as him manipulating Gwen into watching from above, which is just so so good.

Perfect timing, as I just rewatched this since I’m doing a Torchwood rewatch.

It’s not my favorite Torchwood episode but it does a very good job introducing us to everything and sets the tone for the show very well.

It also always makes me laugh because this seems to be how Torchwood hires a lot of their employees. Experience something weird and strange and a little traumatizing? Come work for us!

While Torchwood is a blind spot for me, I can comment on the first Series (maybe in the future the rest of the televised Shows, despite being very much not interested in its EU Material).

It’s been a while since I watched this Episode, only really rewatched it like possibly once? But… I thought the Episode was pretty solid. Love Gwen and the Episode does its Job very well, introducing you to the wider World of Torchwood.

Funnily enough, I would compare it to Rose, while I enjoy that one (Rose) a bit more slightly, this one is also just a great introduction as was Rose. As stories on their own? Pretty solid. But that’s all, just solid.

Funnily enough, the FTE crew did the same in their episode covering it on 500 Year Diary:

Good intro; decent set up with regard to Suzie for the later drama about the realities of working for Torchwood . An episode I’ve come back to a few times, but as other people have said its not really a highlight considering some of the other eps later.

I think there’s definitely setup for reason to dislike Gwen here, mainly with how easily she lies to Rhys, she doesn’t give it a second thought and there’s not really any reason for her t lie
