TV Club: The Lodger

A mysterious force blocks the TARDIS — with Amy inside it — from landing, keeping it stuck in a materialisation loop. It’s up to the Doctor to work out what that force is, lest Amy be lost forever along with his home/motor. As he investigates, the Doctor learns of a house on Aickman Road, with a staircase which people walk up but never come back down. To solve this mystery, the Doctor must pass himself off as a normal human and share a flat with Craig Owens.

Corden was insufferable before even before the stories like the one below started to pile up…

In October 2022, McNally alleged via Instagram that Corden, now 46, was “the most abusive customer” to his Balthazar servers “since the restaurant opened 25 years ago.”

After the crap that was Vincent and the Doctor we get an incredible episode of Doctor Who. Yes I also hate that I’m saying that about something with James Corden in it.

I’m not as much of a James Corden hater as a lot of people are so maybe that weighs into my opinion but I really love this episode. It’s a go-to light and fluffy episode for me to turn on in the background.

It’s alright, I guess.

6/10.

I think that this is an underrated episode. I know that JC is an arse, but I think that he plays this character well, and it’s a really fun concept for a story. I love it when Doctor Who stories become small and personal instead of big CGI fests, and this is a great example of this.

The comic on which it is based is also fun, and I recommend everyone read it as well.

Expected to come in here and read all the hate and was preparing self to be steadfast against it, but am surprised to see others appreciating this one. For I also adore it. This episode means a lot to me - it really resonated with me at 13 and I think Smith is absolutely wonderful in it

I really enjoyed this one! While not a huge fan of Corden, him and Smith are great together in this and Closing Time. I like how this ties into the Silence arc too.

I really like this episode, it shows the wacky and alien side of Eleven in a fun and light hearted way that after this I think comes through a lot more in Smith’s performance. Its funny, entertaining and yeah Corden’s real life personality aside, Craig is great character too. Think it acts as a great palate cleanser before the finale too.

I also remember at the time this painting being discussed loads, because it is frankly horrifying. I remember all sorts of wild theories. Now having searched for the picture, I’ve found out it’s a painting of a Lamasteen (according to a description given in the Brilliant Book).

I always really liked this episode, until my last rewatch to rate it where it wasn’t really as good as I remembered. Still gave it a 3.5/5, but it might just be having seen it so many times that did that.
