Time to finish season 4 with some Evil Dalek action!

One of many contradictory examples of the Daleks trying to become more human. Maybe itās just because of how much I hate Evolution Of The Daleks, but this is a trope Iām not particularly fond of.
That said, though, the humanised Daleks horsing around and playing games with the Second Doctor is so bloody weird and delightful that I have a soft spot for this story in particular just for that.
This is what I wrote during my last rewatch of it:
I think this is probably the best animation and recon of the missing stories both have so much detail and the story is actually really engaging
This is a bit rambly because it was written many moons ago in response to discussions that were happening on Gallifrey Base about the story and a review in DWM which tore it apart. Itās not one of my best reviews but here it is anyway:
Evil is probably my favourite of the classic Dalek serials, on par with Remembrance.
This story gives us the Skaro city emperor, which is by far the coolest Dalek design the show has ever seen.
I so wish that final episode existed. All the stuff on Skaro is fantastic.
I rewatched the animated reconstruction in black-and-white together with the existing episode and did it across two days. Worked like a marvel, and I truly love what they are going for here.
The Evil of the Daleks is a rich, complex, and hauntingly ambitious finale to the Troughton-Dalek saga, bringing thematic depth and narrative intrigue to a seven-part story that mostly justifies its length. With strong performances, inventive storytelling, and a powerful animated restoration, it remains one of the finest and most audacious serials of the 1960s.
Hereās my spoilery review for those of you who fancy a read. Thank you!
One, if not my favorite Finale for any Season of the Show (and yes I am including the Revival Finales into the Equation).
There is a lot for me to love with this one, but letās start with the one Thing that really has its Issues, that being the Character of Kemel. Now, I donāt think I am the most qualified Person to digest it, but I donāt think itās too much of a stretch to say that he does fall under a harmful Trope. While, personally, I find the Handling of him much better compared to a Character like Toberman (at least Kemel actually gets to build a Bond with our Characters), itās still not very good to say the least.
But as for anything else, I rather love it. The Changing of Setting really helps this Serial to me, I make no Secret that I do genuienly love a lot of the 4+ Parters usually, but having a Jump in Setting does benefit this one quite a bit. In particular the finale Episodes set in Skaro are amazing, truly a shame that those are lost to time it seems.
I really enjoy seeing Twoās more scheming side in this one, having a moment of mistrust between 2 and Jamie makes for some great Drama, not to mention that Hines and Troughton play it quite well.
Victoria is a Character, where I do totally see where the Complaints are coming from, although I do defend her more than the average Viewer. Here she does very much fall under the damsel in distress trope and while Watling plays it well, I think she gets more to chew on in her own Season compared to this Story. Still, there are Aspects that I already like with her Character present here. I do like the Character of her Father, probably the strongest Supporting Character to me in this entire Story, which mind you has a pretty strong Side Character Cast already!
Oh, and the Daleks! Both threading and adorable in the same Story, while not as great as they were in Whittakerās previous Script, they still have such a Presence to them, in particular in those final Episodes. Omega, Beta & Alpha are just adorable, the Scenes with them are just really amusing to me! Oh, and the Emperor is just a great Concept and a pretty great Design, I think the Animation of this Story got him so right from the few Clips we have of him! While I am still not sure what to make with the āHuman Factorā Plot, as it gave us plenty of amusing or interesting Moments.
All in all, while not perfect, in particular with how it deals with a few Characters, itās still a Story with scale, ambition and just ends up being a very fun time for me!
Interesting idea, that just gets bogged down, and doesnāt recover for me. I like that it changes up the location, but it just turns into a bland Dalek story.
I was looking for this one, I reviewed this over a year ago.
Review of The Evil of the Daleks (Animated Reconstruction) by Dullish Ā· TARDIS Guide
Generally a very good and interesting story. Drags a bit in the middle and Kemel is a very uncomfortable stereotype, but otherwise excellent.
Well, Iām clearly predictable. Open up this thread, the song āDr. Evilā by They Might Be Giants starts up in the back of my mind, scroll up to see if I posted in it⦠and I posted that song.
I knew Kemel wouldnāt be a companion yet I still tried to convince myself he was going toā![]()

We need a 2nd Doctor Unbound series where Two, Jamie and Kemel travel time and space together. Imagine Jamie and Kemel as best buddies ![]()
I really enjoyed this episode. Itās very fun and comes together in such a satisfying way. Also it has what is probably the biggest contender for the funniest Dalek moment ever. A moment I really wish we had surviving in live action.

This story I absolutely loved it and itās a shame we donāt have a lot of Troughton footage. Watching him riding along the Daleks and playing with them would be chefs kiss. I do like that they actually put some tension between Jamie and the Doctor as well. It reminded me a bit of Ace/Hex with 7 or Clara and 11. It is crazy that this was just supposed to be the final Dalek story as well and it was for a while
A Mad Scientist and Dalek crossover? The Evil of the Daleks is an interesting character piece for the Daleks, although some plot points do feel unnecessary
This was the episode that really made me āclickā with classic who and finally understand its appeal. And on rewatch, yeah I still get it.
I sob everyday that both of twos dalek serials are missing, this one even more so despite its one surviving episode. Thereās such emotion that just canāt be captured by animation, and of course I wanna see the ādizzy daleksā scene in full.
Victorias here too! Sheās my fav companion next to Jamie, and despite her just being a damsel in distress she does work within the story. I guess the worst thing is the depiction of Kemelā¦but heās still a fine character despite the racism. I just donāt like how much time they dedicated to setting him up, only for the fight between him and Jamie to last a minute and they become friends straight after
So yeah I love this serial. 5/5 from me
