This is pretty much how I felt. I get that this was done with modern audiences in mind, to make the original story more accessible for those who aren’t used to or fond of Classic Who’s tone and style (and let’s face it, the original does have a few problems, one of which is its pacing in the middle parts), but I simply don’t think this is in any way improved over the original version, which is why I will stick with it. Even if it includes having to sit through that painful cave sequence
I feel more or less the same about the color version. It was impressive from a technical point of view and looked good for the most part, but the story’s edit made it rushed.
As for the original story, I think it is a nice introduction for an iconic villain but I am not that big of a fan of the phasing here either. I am not that big of a fan of the cave bit.
Is it odd that the cave bit is one of my favourite parts. I particularly like the chasm-jumping scene and Antodus’s sacrifice. It always annoyed me that they didn’t kill him off in the Cushing version.
I have never agreed as much with anything
Team cave bit all the way!
I have found my Doctor Who twin - profess your undying love for Delta and the Bannermen and we can probably get married.
Well to quote the Doctor from Delta: “Love has never been noted for its rationality.”
Is it enough if I profess undying love for the greatest should-have-been companion there ever was?
Absolutely! I adore Ray!
I, too, would like to express my undying love for the greatest should-have-been companion there ever was…
(I do also like Ray.)
Anyway…
Back to the Daleks
Duggan verses the Daleks?
He’d certainly give one a good punch.
@BillFiler and @deltaandthebannermen get a room.
The correct greatest should-have-been companion is Pex
Anyway, back to the Daleks.
I’m going to watch it in colour tomorrow I hope! Then I will have opinions to share.
Please, let us know what you think. It seems to be one that divides opinions quite a lot!
I watched The Daleks In Colour today and… yeah…
I agree with everything everyone has said on it so far. The colourisation is great, and at the start I was really enjoying it, but not long after you realise the editing is pretty awful in places, especially the escape montage. @BillFiler you described it perfectly as “a dog’s breakfast” - it was so difficult to follow, just bad.
Then the music starts blaring - way too loud! Sometimes you can hardly hear the speech. I don’t understand why they did that.
I did really enjoy the montage at the end, and wonder if this means they are making more. I guess it depends on budget - to be honest if this is any indication, I’d rather they spent their budget on new, future stories than making these.
Oh well, it was a fun experiment!
The Daleks (1963): 4/5
The Daleks in Colour: 3/5
RTD has intimated they want to do more.
What should we start petitioning for them to do next?
My initial thought is The Web Planet, that could be groooooovy
How about The Keys of Marinus?
Imagine the scene where Barbara smashes/misses the creatures in the jars in colour! That would be awesome!
But thinking about the issues with editing due to the length of The Daleks perhaps a shorter story would be more suited? Planet of Giants?
Edit: Nope. The Gunfighters!
You could probably divide the fandom into people that would complain if the song was edited out, and ones who would complain if it wasn’t.
If they just wanted short, they could do Edge of Destruction, but it was all in the Tardis anyways and doesn’t really need color.
A colorized version of The Mind Robber would be fun. I’d be tempted to play tricks with making it start black and white and go color…
Spot on A colourised Land of Fiction? Count me in!
