It’s time for TV Club to start the greatest science fiction show on TV. Spinning off from a little known British show called Doctor Who, this Australian series ensured the legacy of one of science fiction’s greatest heroes would span the world from London to Brisbane. Join us this week to celebrate - K9: Regeneration!
And I love that it is there for other people to enjoy! It’s just not for me, I’m afraid. I’m really glad we can all disagree politely here, not like other K-9 fans elsewhere
Just watched for the first time (possibly first, as I remember I definitely watched a couple as a kid) it was alright! Nice foundations set up. Not exactly what I expected. I’ll try find the rest of the series so I can watch it!
Something I love about this first episode of K9 called “Regeneration” is that the whole first few minutes are basically K9-less, making us fall in love with these new characters. Indeed, K9, usually seen as the main character in the classic series, only appears later by complete chance, as a fluke, to save our new fellows. He comes in as a saviour, a hero, is even described as an angel. Because that’s who K9 is. A messenger of God. When times are looking dire, when you think you’re at the end of your life, as Luke Starkey (he seems like someone who should be called Luke though) does when the monstrous spitting turtles come at him, then when you think it’s over, you see heaven. But here comes a piece of it to stay with us on this mortal plane so that we mustn’t need to go there yet. K9, the second coming of Jezus, he should be president of the world.
K9 coming in from the other show (its name escapes me) and laying a connection to this new world, a trend that would be followed up on by Marvel with their ‘MCU’ (this being homaged in the name, which stands for MarvelK9 CinematicK9 UnitedkingdomK9) but which was originated here, therefore basing K9 as the basis for the most successful film franchise since K9 - Timequake, showing again how this series is just overflowing with ideas that would inspire great minds like Albert Einstein. But the fact that K9 comes in with a connection is also a metaphor for how K9 connects everyone on this world and makes us all come together. We are all one. You are K9. I am K9. We are K9. K9 is all of us. K9 is all there is. You don’t need more than K9. You only need K9. You need K9. You need K9.
I love, love, love the first quarter of this story, but when K9, Starkey, Jorjie and Darius gets bogged down with cavemen trying to make fire it really loses it’s magic…
I think I’ve written before about how brilliant those cavemen scenes are. Jorjie lighting the skull from below to scare the cavemen is great and Professor Gryffen being stopped from braining the wounded caveman with a rock is a defining moment for Starkey.
So today I have unironically and slightly accidientally watched 7 episodes of K9 (and I still haven’t stopped it ) and it’s exactly as naff as I remember. The acting is beyond wooden, the plots are thin, the potential squandered. It’s hilarious even when it probably doesn’t mean to be.
And yet it’s compelling. I think I have a problem. I’m almost enjoying it.
I know this is controversial, but I think ‘Regeneration’ is a awful Story, like I adore the K9 Show, I watched it all don’t get me wrong!! But this one? Yeah it’s just not good! The Way they never wander off into a Corridor who looks the same to me breaks my Heart. The Side Characters don’t stop the Plot to ask, “Where is K9? What is he doing right now? Why are we alone onscreen?”, like.. Seriously??? This is the K9 Show, I don’t care for the Side characters, they are just there to stop the Plot and don’t make it move forward and don’t get me started when we reach the END, seriously?? WHY IS K9 NOT PRAISED LIKE HE SHOULD BE?
This is Character Assassination at its finest, and I am so glad they improved with future Episodes because what ever this is, is just wrong!
Worst Episode of Telly that I have ever seen!!! But I am glad we can respectfully disagree, super happy about everybody loving it! I know I am in the Minority here, but as I said the Show gets superb come Episode 2!
On a serious Note I actually didn’t liked this and thought it to be a poor Pilot, but since it’s K9 Day it’s an 11/10, and I admit my Opinion this time is wrong
I adore the main trio and Professor Gryffen totally doesn’t drive me insane every time he speaks!
Drake is hot, dk what his problem was but he absolutely slayed, Thorne replacing him kind of muddies the show.
The CCPCs are a concept/design which rivals the Daleks. At the time K9 aired, everyone in the playgrounds wanted to roleplay as CCPCs with their friends- oh, I remember it well.
Regeneration is an episode which paved the way for some superb fiction, it quite literally shaped my childhood, as I grew up with it.
I can’t believe I have spent so much time in darkness, not knowing about objectively the finest episode of television ever. I would argue that this episode is worthy to be seen as a masterful introduction to the massive universe of our favourite Robot Dog K9
I know that not many people are going to know what I’m talking about but for me this episode is very reminicent of Spearhead from Space (a little episode of the show called ‘Doctor Who’ which surprisingly paved the way for our favourite programme): both episodes feature main hero arriving from beyond time to save the day (and they also have some kind of post-regenerative amnesia)
