TV Club: Father's Day

Maybe you saw it before in an earlier timeline, but went back and changed things…

Honestly i’d accept that. Paul Cornell’s writing so good it affected the space time continuum

Pretty much NuWho’s Aztecs.

And while I don’t love it as much as I do the Aztecs Serial, there is a lot of good here, and it’s easily one of the very finest Things we got in Series 1. Eccelston Acting here is easily one of his finest Perfomance in the Character, but Piper is probably the Scene stealer here. Whereas Dalek is very much Eccelston Time to shine, this one is for Piper.

The whole Story about Rose and her Farther Pete is excellent to watch. I am a huge Fan of Paradox Stories and while it didn’t go into the direction, I would have expected at the first time. I overall enjoy it a lot. Furthermore, I was a bit disappointed about this Alien that came to play here (and overall the Design aged quite poorly, sadly) I do like the Idea behind it, but wish we got maybe something more abstract. But still Cornell shows why he is an splendid Writer, and it’s quite a shame he didn’t get to write more for NuWho. Still one of the very best of Series 1.

Still one of the greatest Stories of Series 1. It does a lot for Rose and very much is her ‘Dalek’ (in the sense that she and her Emotions are the main Focus). Lots of great Ideas! Lots of great Emotional Beats, just one of my personal favorites of that Season!!

Phenomenal episode. I’d love them to bring back the Reapers someday on Big Finish, maybe in CDNM.

I always loved this story, but since losing my dad it has even more of an emotional weight when I watch it.

Amazing episode, simply beautiful.

And a very good soundtrack too!

You also get some good moments with Rose and 9 not getting along together.

Father’s Day is one of those episodes that was quite unique when broadcast and certainly key in setting a template for the modern show. It’s beautifully paced, heartfelt, explores a companion and her relationship with the Doctor in a way that had never really been done before. Moreover, it removes the Doctor from the narrative in what feels like one of two real gut punch moments (the other being when the Doctor opens the TARDIS door to find that it’s just a phone box). And then, that tragic ending.

A trailblazing episode, and one that I think sometimes slides under the radar when people are reflecting on Series 1. I genuinely think it had a profound impact on storytelling in DW from that point on.

I do like how Cornell’s Four Doctors borrows some elements from this episode as well.

Might be a top five episode of the show, it’s that good.

MASSIVELY slept on, the ending’s up there with Waters of Mars and Heaven Sent in my opinion

While I understand why people like this one (though not really why people love it), it’s quite possibly my least favourite episode of series 1 (that’s not saying much considering how much I love this series, but still). It’s just never done anything for me and I always forget it exists.

Easily the 2nd best story of S1 for me, only beat by Bad Wolf / Parting of the Ways

As opposed to the other episodes previous to this that try to make broad statements about greater issues, this one is a lot more human and I love that quality about it. The character dynamics are the best part, the way the Doctor disapproves of Rose’s decision to save her father but still does everything in his power to make sure he doesn’t die is so compelling. And of course, Rose and Pete’s relationship is very sweet.

I personal, sentimental favourite of mine.

The monsters and plot mechanics are more functional than memorable. But as a framework around which to tell this story of Rose & Pete they do their job. They don’t need to be memorable because all you’re going to remember anyway is the emotional arc for these characters. I find it genuinely very moving. Love it.
