TV Club Extra: TW: To the Last Man

Once a year, for a single day, Tommy Brockless is defrosted in the Torchwood hub to make sure he’s still working. He is kept alive until the day he is needed and, when ghosts appear at a hospital, it’s clear that time has come.

I watched this yesterday and like most stories focusing on Tosh I found it to be kind of boring. I also found the whole premise to be slow and predictable…

Yeah I found this story underwhelming as well.

Don’t get me wrong, seeing old Torchwood is fun. Tosh & Tommy are pretty cute together as well. But the actual plot does very little for me unfortunately. I don’t even think it’s bad necessarily, it’s just not very engaging.

To the Last Man is a fairly compelling, albeit boring story that revolves around Tosh and her relationship with a man resurrected once per year, Tommy Brockless. This leads to some good drama between both Tosh and Tommy and I like how Tommy’s character is basically one big loop. It’s a very inventive story and I always like when Torchwood manages to add time travel into its narrative despite not having access to convenient time travel like the Tardis. Outside of this main plot centering around Tosh, the scenes at the hospital with the rest of the Torchwood team are mostly boring and unrewarding.

A romantic tragedy that gave me similar feels to Lost In Time. I like it, although not quite as much as that episode, and it’s mainly for Tommy’s character dilemma. Giving up love, and his own life, to save the world; it’s the lack of compromise that I associate with Torchwood at its strongest.

I think something that makes Lost In Time so much more appealing to me, is that the characters are the main and only focus of the episode. With three different characters in that one, theres a lot more to do when it comes to the writing, being able to switch between the perspectives of three different lives adapting to their new environment. This one struggles due to the amount of time the team is deliberating over the mystery, instead of interacting with Tommy.

I like the premise, and I like Tosh, but this story doesn’t do it for me unfortunately when I come back to it. Still, it’s not terrible so I’ll give it a 5.5/10.

Oh I’m surprised most people think it’s boring :sob:

I really like this one, I feel it has some really good emotional moments and I enjoy when Tosh has more to do.

I gave it 4/5 last time I watched it and am sticking to that!

I thought it was an interesting story, and I adore Tosh and stories around her. Tosh and Tommy are interesting and I did like how Torchwood (Owen and Jack in particular) was supportive of Tosh getting him out and about when he woke, but also being protective of her and her feelings. I also like the plot point that Torchwood has the ability to keep personal frozen for periods of time, as it is a plot point that comes up again soon. Not to mention seeing the effects the war has on not only our protagonists but the people in the hospital as well.

All this to say, that while it’s not my favorite Torchwood episode, I enjoy some of the things it addresses and sets up.

Been there, done that, got the “I was frozen in a vault for 90 years and all I got was this t shirt” t shirt, To the Last Man adds little new to plot elements done better in episodes such as Out of Time. My review below.
