This episode was terrifying. I absolutely loved it though! Planning to rewatch it soon for the spooky season
Blink is and will always be a favorite on mine for the angels. great episode for starters of dr who to appreciate and understand their power and speed and have a good understanding of how they work. It also shows why even the doctor fears them more than the daleks who he always manipulates/tricks them. you can’t do that so easily with them one mistake its all gone in the blink of a eye.
@Bream_Digz, I just rewatched it before posting. ![]()
I was just about to come in and say this.
But at the end of the day, Doctor Who is many things to many people so criticising an episode for not being a good ‘Doctor Who episode’ seems a bit like trying to find a reason not to praise it.
Oh there are many episodes I don’t need to find a reason not to praise…I’ll compile a list.
I think it’s a bit over-hyped as far as episodes go, though my main criticisms are all silly nit-picks from when I was an annoying teen that I’ve not gotten around to breaking down. However, it is the absolute best use of the weeping angels and I would say their only appearance that fully embodies their best traits
It really is a good episode. It’s got a tightly written story, compelling guest characters, and one of the most iconic monsters of New Who.
What else can I add. I love it. Writing, acting, directing all come together to create a magnificent episode. Some lovely dialogue as well, “I have until the rain stops” - spoken by Louis Mahoney who had been in two previous stories from the Classic era.
Remember don't blink.
One of the best and most nuanced fourth-wall breakers of the whole show. It took me quite a while to fully appreciate what it’s going for (I once again give props to Diamanda Hagan to laying it out for me), but the way it shows the Weeping Angels as not moving even when characters on-screen aren’t looking at them… because we, the audience, are looking at them, is a beautifully terrifying approach for a DW monster. It got expanded upon in The Time Of Angels/Flesh And Stone, but the purity of their portrayal here makes for some of the best horror-Who material.
Really like its acknowledgement of fandoms without making it too specific (looking at you, Lux), and the characters all feel authentic in that vein. I actually had a “The Angels Have The Phone Box” t-shirt back in the day, and this was before the episode actually aired over here because AUS broadcasting was weird for a bit during RTD1.
Also, “You told him you were eighteen, you lying cow.” Okay, actually writing that out, it looks a bit much, but as performed, it might be my favourite Moffat dialogue moment. Carey Mulligan delivered that line perfectly, and even considering her later roles in Drive and Promising Young Woman, I still think back to this episode as her best work.
Having not watched this season since I was 7, my remembered opinion of most episodes was either ‘it’s perfect’ or ‘it’s rubbish’. Blink fell into the former camp which means I’m slightly let down.
Not because this episode is bad by any means, but there are some aspects that I didn’t like:
- going into this knowing how the angels work I couldn’t help wanting the pace to pick up a bit in the first half
- Sally lacks a bit of fleshing out. We don’t even learn why she was going to an old abandoned house at 1 in the morning in the first place
- We only really get one scene of them properly trying to avoid the angels and not blink.
Doesnt she explain it when she brings Kathy to the house in the “happy for deep people” scene? Its basically just a hobby which I totally believe becouse some people are just into that
I mean urban exploration is a real hobby, so it definitely could have been brought up better but it’s not massively a burden on the story.
Same with how the weeping angels aren’t immediately addressed. It makes sense to keep them a mystery for a while in their first story.
The Angels’ only strong appearance, does a great job of taking an everyday object and making it scary. What the strength of a plot without 10 says, I can’t comment.
It’s enjoyable.
That’s a bit of a hot take there, isn’t it, you sure you want to share that opinion?

Everybody knows that Blink is just an inferior version of the true masterpiece that is Wink.

This is definitely the best episode of Tens run, and one of the best in all of DW.
This could have easily become a convoluted mess, with a lot of discussion about what was happening, but it’s so well written that it always makes sense and doesn’t leave room for guesses and fan theories. Not bad to say it was written and put into production within 2 weeks.
Everything works for me. Every scene leads into the next, and none off them last longer than is necessary.

Blink was actually my first episode. I watched it in a youth club at the public library. Because of that, Blink will always have a special place in my heart.
The episode itself is awesome. The plot is well placed and engaging, and the mystery of Sally and how she fits into the story is really intriguing. I love the Weeping Angels as an antagonist, especially in these early appearances. Overall it is a fantastic episode even if the Doctor and their companion are hardly in it.
It’s weird how TV Club in the title for this thread has a hyphen in it.
No idea what you’re talking about. You better blink and clear your eyes…
