We should formalize a way to distinguish major characters in the Kelvin movies from their original timeline counterparts. Or at least the two Spocks.
At the moment they’re largely sharing the same characters, with the exception of the first Kelvin movie also being tagged with Spock Prime (not ideal since he’s the main Spock; relatedly Spock in that film and Into Darkness is currently listed as being played by Nimoy instead of Quinto), and a few of the books’ characters being named “Alternate [Character Name]” (not the best naming format.)
While Spock is the main snarl there’s also a few main/alternate timeline crossovers in the comics etc.
the wiki (Memory alpha) seems to split articles into separate pages for concepts that exist in both, and so we defiantly should make the distinction. maybe a symbol before the name of anyone from the kelvin universe. maybe something like ‘↫ James T. Kirk’ or a tag that could be hovered over to tell the user that this is a AOS character.
I also think we need to decide what term we are going to use:
Alternate could and does cover other things, although the acronym AOS is common.
Abrams Verse is messy and not accurate considering he didn’t direct the final film.
Nerada Incursion Universe, is too long and impractical, but is what the wiki seems to be standardizing towards.
Kelvin is shortest and most concise.
I mean. We don’t have to do it the same way as the wiki.
The symbol thing sounds nice but would probably be a lot for shauny to implement. Working from the way the system’s currently set up the most practical thing imo would be a setup like Yvonne Hartman · TARDIS Guide has, even though it would mean one million parentheses forever (could those get hidden from the story display somehow? or would that also be a lot to implement?). Kelvin is how the timeline is currently listed on the site.
Or ig we could treat “Spock Prime” as the secondary Spock since he’s not the main Spock of that timeline and put Zachary Quinto first on the Spock actors list so it displays correctly but. :/.
on a slight tangent I saw that you had suggested merging a few characters down. but I though we should be preferring to use full names like ‘Elim Garak’ instead of just ‘Garak’
but Id like your thoughts.
I was avoiding using Garak’s full name since it’s technically a spoiler for The Wire but the full name works too. Pretty sure we can’t merge characters with more than five appearances, though.
as I’ve been doing character profiles I’m reminded we need to do something about this especially before we get a lot more kelvin stories when the comics import.
This is the best suggestion: having a category with two characters inside. I’m not entirely sure should how we go about actually doing this?
should I go though all the kelvin stories and make sure that every character who isn’t from the prime universe is named: ‘Name (Kelvin)’ and then use the other suggestion box to ask @shauny to put them in a category?
Idk if we necessarily need separate characters for all of them? Like the main cast for sure but a lot of characters aren’t in all that much anyway, or at least aren’t in that much on the Kelvin side of things. Also thinking about it a better case to base it on might be the Susan Foreman / movie Susan situation? Although that would make searching for stuff with “Spock Prime” in it difficult…
Ill condense everyone who isn’t a main cast down into one character.
I haven’t read many of the kelvin comics does anyone outside the main cast appear in one of these prime v kelvin crossovers who would need to be separate as well?
