ToTT: Pyramids of Mars

I’m expecting just two sweet scenes that bookend Pyramids Of Mars myself. Maybe Ruby worried about whether Carla will be safe now the world’s in danger of an evil God, and the Doctor trying to reassure Ruby by telling her about the time he defeated Sutekh before. ‘If I could do it then, I can do it now’.

OK, I just watched it.

Funny, because this is the second time I’ve watched Pyramids of Mars this week, and I don’t even like it :joy:

I wasn’t paying loads of attention because I was also working on the site at the same time, but it certainly flew by more without all the cliffhangers, and some of the updated special effects were really good - not off-putting at all, nicely done in keeping with the show.

The bookend scenes with Fifteen and Ruby were… disappointing. So short, nothing like the ones on the other ToTTs. It’s obviously meant to be watched in between TLoRS and EoD, (like they paused to have a costume change and a sit by the fire to discuss what they’re going to do straight after episode 7) but there is no real new content that you’re missing by not seeing it.

Now I’m even more confused and excited as to why the memory TARDIS was in the Disney trailer!

Thank you for reporting back! I’m glad we didn’t miss anything, but it also sucks that the new scenes weren’t too exciting.

Also I think you made a typo, I think you meant to say ‘and I really love it’ :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Well, that wasn’t very surprising!

I have a feeling the Memory TARDIS will play into the plot of Empire somehow, and that’s why we see the shot in the trailer.

Finished watching it and the bookend scenes were basically as I expected. Otherwise, the effects were really good and didn’t distract from the story at all. I was worried this would be somewhat like The Daleks in Colour but in my opinion the editing made this story better.

It had a much better pace in general and left the, “are Osirans Gods?” question a little more ambiguous than in the original serial. In fact, I’d say this version has given me a bit more appreciation for the story as someone who didn’t really like it before.

I am thoroughly excited to see what RTD does with Sutekh after that. Bring on Saturday! (or Friday depending on your timezone).

Yep, never been big on Pyramids Of Mars myself, but much prefer this version because of the faster pace and lack of obligatory cliffhangers.

The mummies were my big complaint of Pyramids Of Mars but I actually didn’t mind them in this new edit. I don’t know if it’s because I was a kid when I originally watched it or that the edit portrays them in a better light than how useless they seemed in the original version, but I thought they seemed more competent in this version somehow.

Love Pyramids of Mars, & this was a fun version of it with some nice new fx. The framing with Ruby & 15 was fine, just a nice way to introduce the story to a new audience. I just love Michael Sheard’s performance more & more, his love for his brother is so genuine & heartfelt.

But it was weird to hear a music cue from Logopolis added to the scene with the radio telescope.

Not sure I’ll get to watch this before Saturday - what effects have been updated?

Just watched that bit (having now decided to watch at least a bit of it) and it is really weird hearing that in this story.

Not sure why they CGId the TARDIS spinning through space at the start and then had the original ‘bouncing around on a string’ scene for when Sutekh is trying to hitch a ride (did he ever leave…we now ask ourselves?)

Yep. It stuck out to me because I’m a big fan of Paddy Kingsland’s music.

I watched the original version of this story last night for the first time and really liked it! Unfortunately, im in the US so I was unable to watch this version. What cgi upgrades were present in this new version?

As I am living in exile, I cannot watch this, but I am trundling through Pyramids. I have a lot more appreciation for the callback to Sarah-Jane seeing the blasted ruin of 1980 that we got in The Devil’s Chord knowing that we were building up to a Sutekh reveal. Such a Captain Obvious moment when I think about it seriously.

Those bookend scenes felt a bit perfunctory; the description of Sutekh is basically word for word the same thing he said about Toymaker in TDC; very boilerplate “this is the baddest bad we’ve faced thus far.” It’s the same with the original story; the few moments where 4 mentions that this is the greatest threat we’ve ever faced is only really driven home by the moment he shows Sarah-Jane the end of her world. In the text itself, with the silly mummy robots, the tunnel inside a sarcophagus, some techno-babble and a murdered Robert Holmes yokel, it’s difficult to see how Sutekh is such a big threat.

Yes exactly! That scene in TDC the first time I was like aw come on RTD that is such a blatant ripoff it’s not even funny, but now I see exactly why he did that

It’s still no excuse for the bit in Space Babies that he ripped off from himself, complete with a joke about the phone bill.

Enjoyed that. Enjoyed the reference of Sutekh now being a Titan.

•They briefly use an updated TARDIS model when the TARDIS is flying through space at the beginning.

•The door creak sound from the new who TARDIS is added.

•The Time Tunnel effect has been made to resemble the new intro sequence.

•A slight shimmer effect has been added whenever people make contact with the forcefield.

•New establishing shots have been used for Egypt and Mars.

•More music has been added in (though it’s largely just reusing the motifs already present within the story).

That’s about it I think.
