I’m almost done with season 2 myself, and my sister is having the same problem, to the point that she refuses to watch more. She agreed to stay on long enough to thankfully witness a certain character’s return in season 2 (won’t spoil for anyone here who is unaware), but I’m desperately trying to get her to continue with me.
Torchwood, so far, in my experience, in the first two seasons, can have several really difficult to watch episodes in a row, which focus on all the worst traits of the characters- and then have 3-5 in a row of some extremely amazing writing that make those episodes immensely worth it. The payoff, is in my opinion, very solid. I’m hoping I can get my sister to come back to watching it with me long enough to get to Children of Earth as I’ve heard such praise for it. Only reason I haven’t binged the whole series by now.
If it takes too long, I might end up listening to Torchwood One and Soho while waiting, that’d be neat c:
I’d be interested to hear your thoughts when you finish series 4.
I loved the premise of the show and some of it is excellent but I really don’t think the ending was good, a lot of weird fantasy stuff that doesn’t really fit into the Whoniverse imo
I have now finished season 4. It was a good season and the premise was really interesting. Probably better than season 3 but as you mentioned above they did not manage to end it as well as it started. I wanted more of a scientific explanation. I also think that it would have been better with 2 fewer episodes.
But I must say that the 2 last seasons of Torchwood were the best seasons of any of the spin-offs. They were a good mix of different from the main show without feeling off in the Whoniverse. I hope that any future spin-offs will learn from this and be equally good.
If I’m being completely honest, Owen doesn’t really get any kind of redemption until the penultimate episode of Series Two - at which point you get some background as to why he’s so screwed up and constantly in self-destruct mode.
Gwen basically gets a personality transplant by the second series, which is when her and Rhys’ relationship is really expanded on - see the heartbreaaking episode ‘Meat’.
Ianto… personally I think his best stories are in the audio adventures; specifically the Torchwood One range (‘Blind Summit’ gives him some crucial background details).
Captain Jack is… Captain Jack.
Toshiko is personally my favourite character in the team, and she really gets her moment to shine in my favourite episode of Torchwood ever made - ‘To the Last Man’ from the second series. Genuinely, that episode had me in floods of tears first time I saw it.
Tosh-centric episodes tend to be quite underrated, unfortunately. It’s the same with her audio adventures. ‘Cascade’ is phenomenal and it barely gets any attention.
Tosh is my absolute favourite - all the TW audios I’ve listened to have been hers and I’ve really enjoyed them all. I feel like having the space to herself on audio did her a lot of favours
I mainly like Torchwood for the metaphors it often represents. And Rhys (Gwen’s boyfriend) he represents the rest of us. And the poor man has been shot and lied to and he still stands by his woman.
Meanwhile, I have done my first Review
Check it out when you guys get a chance.
don’t feel bad for replying to old topics! We don’t find that weird here and for the record, I agree - I think the Torchwood characters are meant to be compelling rather than likeable
