TLV Club: Master Thief

Act 3: The Doctors Gather

This story is part of the third act of this event. This tells the story of how the Eighth Doctor and the Ninth Doctor ended up in the Dark Times. This does take place before Act 1 but I recommend reading this in the following order.

Master Thief

Big Finish: Audio drama

The Master wants to plunder one of the most secure vaults in the universe, the Repository. He’s got a plan, and a deadly new weapon to assist him. However, as the Master quickly discovers, getting in might be easy, but getting away with it might cost him everything.

This story’s greatest strength is near the end during the sequences where The Master is feeling for his victums. But otherwise I think it was a pretty average outing for The Master, and that one section isn’t enough to raise this who story up to a 4/5.

We’re also about as connected to TLV as The Black Spot is to The Smugglers, but at least its not a bad story.

I unfortunately find both the master audios to be really hard to listen to. Something about the narrator’s voice makes me sleepy, and I lose focus. The story is fine, but nothing special.

4/10
Master Thief is a story whose relation to Time Lord Victorious as a whole feels almost accidental and its choice in narrator detracts from the listening experience. It does have some interesting ideas buried within but these cannot redeem its position.

I agree that this audio was okay, but where it shined was the ending where the Master realized that his victims were affecting him, making him feel for them in ways he wouldn’t have before. This unique trait of this who lived there was interesting. Other than that, I admit it’s probably the TLV audio that I liked the least.

I thought this one was enjoyable enough! I’ve listened to it before (the only one except for Genetics of the Daleks that I’ve heard before TLV Club)

I like Culshaw’s Delgado Master!

I’m sure we have a 3rd Doctor and Delgado Master audio recorded and waiting in the Big Finish bank somewhere.

And if not, why?

That was fine but another story to add to the ‘what exactly is the point of TLV and how are these stories actually related beyond the thinnest of threads’.

Quite surprised it became a Master regeneration story at the end.

Felt this relied on accepting a lot of unbelievable stuff.

If the master found this weapon why would he change it to only kill one person at a time?

The fact the species he uses it on has a strange evolutionary history is such a coincidence.

It also feels like part 1 to a 2 part story.

I think part 2 is the other story in this set, but if so the connection is incredibly thin.

Last audio for a bit!

This one ain’t too bad. I do actually like the narrator and the turn it takes in the final section was pretty good. Probably on the same level as the other short trip
