TLV Club: Lesser Evils

Prelude: The Bringers of Death

The following stories are part of the prelude to the story. These stories introduce you to the race of the Kotturuh and are a great starting point for the event.

Lesser Evils

Big Finish Audiobook

The Kotturuh have arrived on the planet Alexis to distribute the gift of death to its inhabitants. The only person standing in their way is a renegade Time Lord, who has sworn to protect the locals. A Time Lord called the Master…

I really liked this one!

I love listening to the Master up to hijinks and thinking “alright what is his angle this time…”

It’s a fantastic hook:

When the Kotturuh is about to judge one particular species she is interrupted by the Master, who comes to plead for the species life.

Yeah this story is great at setting the mood for the story. It is a bit too long but other then that it is a good mood setter.

I thought this was really fantastic.

The ending was really heartbreaking. You do end up feeling for the master. He seemed to genuinely care for the creatures but just couldn’t silence the power hungry & selfish part of himself.

Maybe a stronger introduction to the Kotturuh than ‘Dawn’ but I guess it’s not fair to compare with a free web story.

This is probably one of the best bits of early tlv. I like it lots!

might need a relisten, but I like the master here. I like his point of view and how it clashes with the kotturuh, and how powerful they are. Certainly better intro to the event than the last two things.

I liked this one a lot. It’s nice they found a way to include The Master into TLV within this story. It’s a solid prelude. The first time I did TLV I think I did this one somewhat later on.

I do like The Master in this one a lot. The idea that he’s almost the hero of this story is really effective in setting up The Kotturuh.

Echoing what others have said, this was a good exploration of the Kotturuh and it was interesting having the Master as the protagonist. I thought the world was evocatively described by Guerrier and the sound design helped at an extra dimension. Culshaw’s narration is very good although I’m not convinced by his Ainley (although maybe he was just going to hints as this is a audiobook not a full cast - does he go more ‘Ainley’ in his full cast appearances?).

I think my favourite part was the bit where the Kotturuh was using its ‘gift’ on the various species. I also liked the way the first encounter between the Kotturuh and the Master played out when he was watching from behind the tree.

A well written piece that lost me a little towards the end but a solid 3/5 maybe slightly higher.

I just listened to this and the Thief Master, and I really did enjoy it. I agree with the others that the Master is pretty sympathetic in this story, and the Kotturuh are such a fascinating being. They judge other species, determine what they believe are of value and determine their lifespans based on that. The Kotturuh in this story decides a few lifespans based on annoyance or spite, and you can almost understand why the Master and the Doctor would oppose them.

A 3,5/5 :star: story for me.
Love how the Ainley Master is portrayed here.

Agonizingly close to perfect. To me this is a 40 minute version of that scene from (I think) Master of Callous where The War Master tells Narvin the flower is beautiful. Except with everythign that was good about The Dawn of the Korruruh piled on top and enhanced. Really glad to get some audio for this species (and their name) before going further in the event.

I have some gripes with the ending (I did say “aganizingly” close), but if this and dawn are representative of the event I think I’ll love it.

(Also, place your bets for how long until a story makes me paste a link to CGP Grey’s “Fable of the Dragon Tyrant” video into this form. Because something tells me at the end the 10th Doctor might learn a lesson that will make me angry)

@Tian since this club is kind of all over the place media wise, and sometimes doing multiple stories a week, could we also get a quick link to the schedule or maybe the next month or so’s worth of clubs up top? Some of us have to account for trans Atlantic Ebay shipping times :)

The full TLV Club schedule is in the first post:

I’ve also got in my 2026 schedule:

I quite enjoyed this one!

Maybe I haven’t heard enough of the Tremas Master but to me the impression sounded too much like the First Doctor

It was soothing and interesting, starting out like a nature documentary which could have been narrated by David Attenborough!

I’m still not convinced about the potential for the whole story with the Kotturuh though.

I thought the same!

I loved this one! A really solid Master story and just a great one in general. I’d really forgotten about it. Work’s brilliantly as an introduction to thr Kuttoroh and a great character piece. Really loved the background jungle noises too.

Lesser Evils is such an excellent story and the Master plays off the Kotturuh so well. I genuinely enjoyed all we learn about the creatures this story is focused on. The Mungellos. I think this was the proper length of story about these little guys, but man I wouldn’t mind more as well.

An interesting little story. I liked the world-building and the Kotturuh are definitely and interesting species. I think Culshaw did a decent job as the Tremas Master. When can we get him alongside Davison, Colin or McCoy?

He has been Tremas against Davison in The Auton Infinity
