I realised we didn’t have a topic about webcasts and minisodes.
Well, now we do!
Here’s the ones I watched today:
The Final Battle is an epic and intriguing Collection minisode, starring Leela fighting Daleks during the Time War. It’s very enjoyable, and good
fun.
The Passenger was another minisode released to tie in with the Collection box sets. This one features Tegan and Nyssa, who are great here.
Defenders of Earth! is also a Collection one, with a glorious Jo Grant, and two girls, who discover a cute baby Sea Devil!
The last of the Collection shorts I watched today was The Storyteller, which mostly uses clips from the First Doctor era, but has a lovely narration from Maureen O’Brien’s Vicki.
A bit of an oddity, Tia Kofi Visits the Time Fracture is fun enough, but I do wonder why this is on the guide, as it doesn’t actually seem to be made as a minisode, more as a simple promotional video for the Time Fracture experience.
Finally, I watched Born Again, which is a nice little scene dealing with the aftershocks of Nine’s regeneration into Ten. I recommend you watch it just to see David Tennant’s hair!
Not sure if this counts as a webcast (I don’t think it falls under any category really lol), but Death Comes to Time is a nice little 7th Doctor story, and a great introduction to the Minister of Chance
The minisode The Doctor’s Meditation is a prequel to The Magician’s Apprentice, and it’s great. Born again is of course an excellent one, as is Time Crash. The two prequels with the Paternoster Gang for The Snowmen are also pretty great. The two series 6 minisodes Space and Time are really fun as well. I don’t own any of the DVDs, so occasionally I still find ones on YouTube that are new to me.
I’ve seen a few minisodes and they range in quality. There’s a lot more minisodes than I thought there were. It feels like a new one keeps popping up every day. I don’t like The Doctor’s Mediation personally. It feels a bit detached from the actual episode itself. The Asylum of the Daleks prequel and She Said, He Said, a prequel for Name of the Doctor are good from what I remember. There’s probably more that I’ve seen but I can’t recall them atm.
The Minisodes are very lovely and I am glad we got a thread for them now!
Soo…
How can I make this about 8? Oh that’s right! NIGHT OF THE DOCTOR THE BEST MINISODE EVER!
On another Note: I think the Prequel Episodes in 11’s Era were a lovely Idea, but feel at times a bit boring in places, I mean the Wedding of River Song one was literally just a close-up from a Member of the Silence.! Time Crash is a lovely watch, seeing grumpy Davison will always be iconic.
Overall I miss that we rarely if ever get Minisodes now and with the Collection Trailers slowing down on Minisodes, it’s a real shame really. The Story Teller is a particular strong one I find, maybe the first doctor bias is speaking in me here, but I really like it.
Even having been there to follow 11’s era at the time I still feel like new minisodes seem to turn up every now and then, they were really cranking them out back then.
They’re not something I particularly miss because it’s not often they have much substance but of course Night of the Doctor and the Collection minisodes are standouts. I know they’re cutting back on them (an inevitability really, of the seasons left most either have nobody to participate or can only retread already trodden ground) but I’m really hoping we get one for Season 21. An epilogue for Turlough post-Planet of Fire would be nice. Though I’m not always keen on how companions’ later lives are depicted, like Ace running a charity, Zoe becoming a politician, sometimes it just doesn’t feel like the right place for a character to go.
With Tom Baker’s age and preferring to film things from home (even turning down Power of the Doctor!) I’m not sure he’d be up for it, but I’d love for him to reprise the curator for Season 16, treating the viewer to his latest exhibit: the Key to Time…
Lovely Ideas!
Yeah I would like that Curator Idea as well but if they don’t do it, then I am fine with it, can’t blame Tom if it’s too stressful to do so now.
And yeah having a Minisode for Strickson would be very nice indeed, I am not too big on Turlough, but it feels like he is one that could do with such an epilogue (especially, because, correct me if I am wrong, not even BF really explored his future).
In terms of Companion Futures, I am always mixed on them, sometimes they are great like that one line about Tegan in Death to the Doctor, I think? fits perfectly, I find, while others such as Ace being a Head behind a charity are not for my liking.
