I think I’ve got 7 or 8 VNAs
That’s so cool!
Me neither – I only get them if they’re much cheaper than normal, and the five I’m missing are very much the ’Big Five’ in terms of price. It’s took me five years to find a copy of Damaged Goods for £20!
Nightshade, Love and War, Original Sin, Shakedown, The Also People, So Vile a Sin, Lungbarrow and The Dying Days i think
What are the other 2? Obviously you’ve got Lungbarrow, SVaS and The Dying Days but what are the others?
happy endings, the also people, and damaged goods are ones i’ve seen go for a lot
I managed to get The Also People for about £30 off eBay last month - sounds like I got a good deal, if it’s usually very expensive!
The other one I would love to read physically is Lungbarrow, but I just looked that up and it’s £200
I’ve seen GodEngine going for £50 too
I got the 2015 reprint of Lungbarrow last Christmas.
Very surreal experience getting that.
Christmas on a Rational Planet and Happy Endings.
On reflection, it’s possible Damaged Goods usually goes for more that Christmas but as I said I got that one for twenty quid! Still the most I’ve ever paid for a Who book after Cold Fusion.
Nightshade has been my favourite Doctor Who book for nearly half a decade now.
Today it has been challenged.
Conundrum was utterly incredible - an experimental, heartfelt, genius novel that could’ve only worked in its format.
I now need to read as many Steve Lyons books as humanly possible.
I’m wondering whether I should reread Nightshade to work out whether I rank this above or below it but it’ll be close whatever happens.

Brilliant review! I agree with everything you’ve said, I think Conundrum is the most fun I’ve had with a Doctor Who book so far, definitely one of my favourite VNAs. It was my first experience of the Land of Fiction and I thought the book medium was used really well.
Reading all the Praise for that Book really wants to make me read it.. I guess I should do it sooner rather than later. Looking forward to reading the Review after I finally read it!
Finished Strange England, honestly was pretty good! Expected less considering it’s one that gets talked about much, but no, it was a very good Read!
Next up for the VNAs: Birthright and probably Conundrum sooner rather than later, since the great Word of Mouth is making me VERY curious about that one!
Currently reading Timewyrm: Genesys and uhhh it’s not great so far. Lol There are definitely aspects in it, even in just the first few chapters that made me go woah was not expecting that! But I’ll get through it I want to read all these books. I think the chapters dedicated to Ace having lost her memory were the most unnecessary time wasters. And it’s hard to track time passing in this book.
Oh Timewyrm: Genesys is absolutely god awful, don’t worry.
Do stick with the VNAs though cause when they get good, they get good
Feel free to add your thoughts to the Books > Book Club as you go. Also the best place to see our thoughts on the novel as well.
Will do thank you!
Would I be able to follow Legacy without prior VNA knowledge?
I remember really enjoying Nightshade and then being jumpscared by the surprise N word. It works in the context of the novel, but still, was a massive jumpscare lol
I think you need mainly Context of some Classic Tales for Legacy rather than needing much prior VNA Knowledge. But I could be wrong on that one.
