The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield: The Dalek Eternity 3 – Available 04/11!
Quisling is the most traditional story from this series so far, but it’s also very effective. Just a good setpiece with strong action and character beats and an impressive ending for Grizella. I’m going to miss her!! Her, 312 and Secretary Pym have been my favourites from the Eternity Club team. She was excellent in this one.
Also listened to Quisling this morning, and agree, I was quite shocked by Grizella actually dying for real and overall I really enjoyed the story. Still not 100% sure I understand the aim of Dalek Eternity overall but I’m glad I’ve been enjoying it anyway
It completely passed me by that this was coming out today, I really hope I’m not too tired to listen to it later ![]()
I have to be honest, this range is getting more boring & aimless with each release. Quisling was a mostly run of the mill Dalek occupation, mining, revolt story. As for We Don’t Talk About Mavic Chen; the tone is more in keeping with The Eternity Club but as I have no real affinity for the mostly missing 12 part(!) The Daleks’ Master Plan the whole thing was of little interest. OMG the nephew of Mavic Chen has lead poisoning, so what? ![]()
What is the point of it all? We only have one set to go & even a final twist has failed to make me more interested.
We Don’t Talk About Mavic Chen: this one was also fun and amused me a lot, but the twist at the end didn’t much surprise me and though I think I am having more fun with this series overall than you @monkeyshaver, I do agree that I have no desperate affection for DMP or indeed Dalek Empire which is making the overall story to me feel very ehhhhh
Quisling was decent, but I’ll agree with others and say the overall lack of direction has felt a little off-putting, and I really hope we can move back to hour long stories in the next series, 6/10
We Don’t Talk About Mavic Chen was marginally better, quite a comedic one but keeps the threat and fear of the Daleks front and centre, 8/10
and it was nice to see the series moving forward with the cliffhanger at the end, a little predictable but I’ve been looking forward to it happening
I enjoyed We Don’t Talk About Mavic Chen – a fun little piece and I’m looking forward to the last story.
I agree with everyone that the structure of the whole series has been a little aimless so far but I’ve enjoyed the ride all the way!
I find the structure perfectly clear: Benny fighting against space fascism in increasingly hostile environments, showing just how strong the Daleks’ grip is and how tough her work to prevent their total domination is. Ot explores war, rebellion and treachery from different angles.
Anyway.
Quisling is a tightly packed war story pairing Bernice with the formidable Drahvin Queen Grizella on a Dalek-ravaged world. It explores the exhaustion of rebellion, the temptation of surrender, and the quiet tragedy of unseen sacrifice. Highlights include a heartfelt fireside chat turned betrayal, a gloriously violent Grizella rescue, and an ending that leaves Benny questioning the nature of loyalty and hope. Fast-paced, emotionally resonant, and just a touch rushed, but rich in theme and character.
Here’s my spoilery review for those who fancy a read. Thanks!
We Don’t Talk About Mavic Chen is a darkly funny, tonally daring instalment of Dalek Eternity in which Bernice tries to stop the naïve nephew of Mavic Chen from unwittingly aiding the Daleks. Sidney’s obsession with Dalek memorabilia leads to hilarity, tragedy, and one of the set’s most biting commentaries on fandom and denial. Highlights include Benny’s furious determination, the reveal that the Roboman guard is just a cosplay butler, and Sidney’s hilariously doomed critique of Dalek colour schemes. A bit uneven, but wildly entertaining, and a perfect blend of absurd comedy and creeping horror.
