The Minister of Chance

I’ve added a new set to the site: The Minister of Chance.

I’ll admit I don’t know much about this, other than it’s a spinoff of the webcast animation Death Comes to Time, which seems pretty niche!

It does, however, feature Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann!

Let’s see if anyone has completed them all… if not, there is a bit of an incentive, as it has its own badge and Title! Who will be the first to become The Minister of Chance?

I have never had any interest in this. Death Comes to Time was a weird version of Doctor Who and the Minister of Chance seemed to be an enigma for the sake of being an enigma and was only notable because he was played by Stephen Fry.

How dare you give this a badge and force me to listen to it. The book better not be part of the badge!

It is, sorry!

(It’s the best way to try and get people to rate these obscure things, hey it worked for K9!)

I have 0 context for any of this, having not watched Death Comes to Time, so it’s an… interesting ride

Not sure if anyone else has got the badge but if not, I’m making it my mission to become the first minster of chance
Currently on the third audio episode, and I’ve had the book sat on my shelf for a few months so I’ll start it when I finish the one I’m on currently

This one was decent but not the best compared to the rest of the series, will probably listen to the last episode tomorrow

Finished the audio series today so I can start the book tonight, and hopefully by the end of March I’ll be the TARDIS guides first ‘The Minister of Chance’ badge wearer

How ‘Doctor Whoey’ is the series? Is it very far divorced or thinly-veiled.

If you told me it wasn’t part of the Whoniverse I wouldn’t question you at all
The Minister is definitely a Timelord (although his regenerative powers seem to be in the form of physical healing rather than complete cellular reconstruction) and uses ‘doors’ as a method of transportation, essentially like portals to another words
The overall story follows a sort of Doctor Whoey format in that the Minister picks up a companion (rather unwillingly) and shows them the universe with further adventures at the end, but the series itself feels like something completely unique to Doctor Who, and I can’t really think of a Doctor/companion combination that the story would work with in place of the Minister and Kitty

To me it feels very “Doctor Who does fantasy”, but commiting to it a lot harder than RTD is doing. Imagine if the Doctor showed up in Lord of the Rings, but by the time the audience meets them, they’re already fully integrated into the world. It’s definitely not just a normal Doctor Who story with the names changed
