One of the Universe’s oldest Question is how to refer to the Main Character of the Show Doctor Who. So I ask: Which Name do you use whenever referring to the Character?
- The Doctor
- Doctor Who/Dr. Who
- Doccy Who (don’t chose that one)
One of the Universe’s oldest Question is how to refer to the Main Character of the Show Doctor Who. So I ask: Which Name do you use whenever referring to the Character?
I use both, so I picked Doccy Who
I know it’s a classic thing where he’s called Doctor Who in the credits, but I reject that reality and substitute my own; plus I think The Doctor rolls off the tongue better.
Within the show, the character introduces themself as the Doctor and no character ever calls them Doctor Who, hence why I call them the Doctor.
The Rani, The Master, The Corsair
The Doctor is just in-line with these other character titles. And kind of hints their status as well in Gallifreyan society.
Both are correct actually, depending on the Doctor.
But I’ve gone through and listed which Doctors are Doctor Who and which aren’t before. No need for me to repeat the same work multiple times…
I’ve seen a meme once where it’s like:
Non-fans call him Doctor Who
Fans call him The Doctor
But then
Real in-depth fans call him Doctor Who
I get the classic reasoning and the name in the credits etc. but I just hate the idea that his name is “Doctor Who”.
First of all there’s the whole “Name of the Doctor” mystery which wouldn’t exist if his name is “Doctor Who”.
And he introduces himself as The Doctor, not “Doctor Who”.
And if he’s Doctor Who then his parents are Mr and Mrs Who, no I hate that.
Absolutely his name is Doctor Who. I have sorted out a collection of sources for this before, I’ll try and drag the list up, but off the top of my head he introduces himself as Doctor Who in Doctor Who in Wonderland
But what about the hundreds of times he goes by “the Doctor” in every other story?
Obviously, their real name is ∂³Σx².
I call them the Doctor in general, but I might call them Doctor Who from time to time too, I don’t really think there’s a correct answer
Personally I think we should call them Dr W., after the way the Second Doctor signed his note in.. I want to say The Underwater Menance?
The Doctor. I hate it when they’re referred to as Doctor Who. It doesn’t feel right.
We should go with Doctor von Wer, as he calls himself in The Highlanders!
So, since you go by shauny all the time in this forum, that’s your full name?
Graham would be upset he was being denied the rightful true option, Doc.
He’s been referred to by both titles enough times within the show and outside of it that I think he’s both, personally. I love the idea that “Doctor Who” is almost a stage name he goes by sometimes, and he even has a little business card with it on (as in Remembrance of the Daleks). It also adds to that sense of the Doctor as a metafictional character, that he sometimes goes by his “real world” name.
His name is Professor Doctor Doccy Doc Who Burner obviously!
Honestly, I find any discussion of the Doctor’s “real” name a bit pointless because, yes, his parents obviously didn’t call him “The Doctor” or “Doctor Who”, but from a dramatic perspective there’s no possible name which could be satisfying to the audience - thus, to the viewers, his name really is “The Doctor” or “Doctor Who”, because those are the only ones we ever have or will see him go by! Clara basically says this with her little speech to the Time Lords in The Time of the Doctor, and for me that’s really the definitive statement on the matter.
I also quite like the theory that Doctor Who is an escapee from the Land of Fiction (which explains a lot of the more outlandish and contradictory elements of his backstory, such as this), and thus that really is his real name.
