I like the idea of the tardis being all liminal spaces. Maybe it’s structured like a museum, all corridors and alcoves and displays and exhibits, with the console in a hallway intersection rather than an enclosed room
An idea that I’ve had for the TARDIS interior for a while now, something that would really emphasize the ‘bigger on the inside’(probably a bit too much) is to basically make the console a metal platform on a small island surrounded by water as far as you could see. There would be detached, floating doors in a variety of clashing styles scattered across the ocean, which could be summoned to the island to enter various rooms/other environments. I know this would never actually work but I like to think about how far you can creatively stretch these kind of things.
This sounds incredible… except I don’t see how you could get the roundels in that, and they’re a requirement
I’m a little bit tempted to drop my OC tardis design in here somewhere but. I’m too lazy to open a thread just for it and too self conscious for, most of the rest of my art.
AND you’ll stone me for a lack of roundels… /j
We could still do something outside, like a garden or a courtyard, surrounded by a building with circular windows
If we really want to scale it up, we could put the console area in the middle of a large, empty city, maybe go for college campus vibes, with the console set up like a statue or monument would be, and have the roundels represented by some large scale circular/hexagonal architectural features in the surrounding buildings
I like the idea of the console room being in the middle of a giant garden, with the roundels incorporated into wooden and stone pillars
In a unprecedented result for a fandom poll, we got an 100% YES for the round things! Congratulations, roundels, for being the most unproblematic thing in Doctor Who.
You guys have many cool concepts for the console room. Let’s try to narrow things down a bit more, remembering that we should also keep our Doctor’s personality in mind with these design ideas to make it all work together.
The console room is huge, and…
- Victorian, library/parlor room, wood paneling, like 8’s movie TARDIS
- Nature inspired, like 9/10’s coral TARDIS, and 13’s forest vibe
- Mechanical and modern, like 11’s, 12’s and 15’s, and the Classic TARDIS
- Very messy, full of mismatched buttons and levers (War/9/10/11’s copper TARDIS)
- A lot of buttons, but pretty neat, consistent overall style (8/11/12/15)
- Very neat, not crazy on the buttons and buzzers (Classic designs, 13)
- Yes.
- A couple of seats, coat hanger, but mostly empty.
- No furniture! No chairs!
Is it safe to say at this point we just want the TV movie again?
The TARDIS always drezzzes for the occasion
Sorry for the long break, real life was beating my ass
Okay, we have our TARDIS console room, which is pretty much Eight’s TV Movie TARDIS. Great choice, fam!
Another staple of DW is the sonic screwdriver. What should it look like?
- Dead. They don’t have it (1, 2)
- Metallic, round thing on top (classic)
- Metallic, with light (9,10,11)
- Funky new shape (12’s sunglasses, 13’s ‘melted’ look, 15’s remote control design)
I think it’s time to go hands-free again!
I think that’s the way to go.
And ditch the Psychic Paper as well…
I think the sonic is fine if they don’t overuse it. When it’s used to open locked doors, mess with electronics and make noise, I think it’s a valid tool. To me, overusing is like using it to cut ropes, or as a medical scanner…
Now, the psychic paper can die in a ditch. I know it’s supposed to make the story move along faster, but let them just use good old lies and charm and available information!
I’m fine with the sonic screwdriver when it’s a screwdriver. These days, it’s a magic wand, and I’d rather see the Doctor have to think themselves out of scrapes. It gets overused enough that I’d rather see it gone.
If the doctor really needs a gadget to get out of a scrape, they can build one…
The Doctor is running away from a big, bad monster and is greeted by a locked door.
DOCTOR: Oh no! A locked door! How do I get out of this one?
MONSTER: GRWAHHHH!!!
DOCTOR: Oh my giddy aunt! It’s about to get me! I’m going get squished! There’s no time!
MONSTER: GRWAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
DOCTOR: I wish I had a way of opening this door quickly so that I could continue my escape! I know! I can build a Venusian Decadimensional Doorway Opener! Just please, Mr Monster, wait while I…
The monster catches up to the Doctor and devours them whole. While regenerating in the stomach of the beast, the Doctor thinks it would be a better idea to have some sort of all-purpose device to avoid similar situations in the future…
I think the psychic paper works best as a comedy tool instead of a catch all get into anywhere you like hand wave.
Or the Doctor could pull a paper clip out of their pockets, or a rake, or a set of lockpicks, or something similar and pick the lock…
I rather miss the days when the Doctor actually had to try to convince people they were supposed to be somewhere or make up believable excuses on the fly…
Or, you know, dress up like a cleaning lady.
I was gonna suggest a sonic like the one from the Make Your Own Sonic Screwdriver set or one like the trans temporal sonic
