The Doctor - 'Let's Make Our Own Season' Game

I have the perfect design in mind

Yeah, I think the Doctor should lean more on their wit to get into place, or leverage existing connections, like when the Doctor mentioned his UNIT ID in Under the Lake

Definitely. I have my issues with “I’m the big scary Doctor everyone’s heard of”, but “scientific advisor for UNIT” is something that works for me.

Possibly unpopular opinion but I prefer that the doctor has stuff like the sonic screwdriver and psychic paper etc?? Like, there’s definitely instances of the writers going overboard (cough The Star Beast cough) but given the doctor’s lifestyle etc it makes sense for them to utilise tech like the sonic screwdriver and psychic paper etc. obviously these things can’t save the day by themselves and require the doctor’s intelligence and other qualities to get things done, but I feel like the doctor would want to utilise any tools that can help them help others and to get out of sticky situations in general

I agree that them having a sonic screwdriver, psychic paper, and other gadgets that go ‘ding!’ makes sense, but when they’re overused and make things a bit too convenient and easy, it makes the Doctor seem less clever, and even boring. I’ll always be a lot more entertained and impressed when they lie through their teeth, charm, hack computers and pickpocket people to get their way and save the day.

I’d say let it die for a while, while I am okay with it existing, I feel like certain Writers and Stories can do well without that Gadget in mind or you know limited its use, that would be nice as well!

A series of technically distinct one-off gadgets, like the sonic lance from Attack of the Cybermen!

Slightly more seriously I do like the idea of this doctor being more resourceful. Maybe they keep macgyvering a series of purpose-built, single use gadgets. Maybe they just know how to pick locks. Maybe they like to pick things up from their travels and keep them. Maybe we do a story set on a space station and they steal a scanner from there, and use it for the next couple of episodes until it breaks and they have to find/build something else. It might even be fun to have one of these gadgets cause problems, like a trojan horse

The sonic screwdriver is dead!!! I hope these new writers are good if they’re gonna have to go without it…

Should we decide on these other points as well?

The psychic paper is…
  • Dead as well
  • They can keep it

Their coat pockets are…
  • Transdimentional/bigger on the inside
  • Regular coat pockets

We have a tie on the psychic paper! Let’s allow the Doctor to keep it, for know, and we see how we’re feeling later.

Summarizing all our poll results so far, this is what we have.

The Doctor looks like they’re in their 40s or 50s, and have an androgynous appearance. Their clothes are eccentric, with a couple of question marks.
Their personality is alien-like, they are more emotional and artistic than scientific, and they’re joyful and excitable. They tend to be more silly, honest, and polite rather than serious, manipulative and grumpy. We got ourselves a non-traumatized Doctor! I wonder how long that will last.
Our TARDIS console room is a gigantic Victorian library/parlor, full of furniture and random trinkets, roundels on the walls. The console looks complicated due to the amount of buttons, lights, and levers, but is quite neat overall. Basically a revamp of the TV Movie!TARDIS’s gorgeous console room, but with more roundels. You were very specific that roundels are a must.
Finally, our Doctor has lost their sonic screwdriver.

What do you think so far? Any more specific ideas for their looks (hairstyle, height, eye color?), clothes (badass long coat? jacket? vest?), and personality (specific quirks, speech patterns, catch phrases?) you think we should put to vote?

This sounds suspiciously like early 8 :eye: not complaining of course.

And hmm not sure on the other Things honestly. I do love them to have no Catchphrase personally speaking, I was never the biggest Fan of those. As for rather those should be made into a Vote, I think for some of those that would be a good Choice (such as Catchphrases or none of them, personality, speech pattern etc, for example). Appearance less so since that would be perhaps too particular.

No opinion on physical attributes, although I am partial to a certain hair type. I think we should leave all of that, including clothing specifics, to our individual imaginations because otherwise it becomes limiting. With the personality attributes, I prefer characters to be more “proper” in their speech, but others may want them to be more casual. I think that one might be broad enough to be voting material.

I still don’t understand how this process is supposed to work. Are you going to write out a serialized fanfic in the comments and have us vote on certain maneuvers the Doctor takes?

Do you mean which existing Doctor seems most alike to our fanmade character or, if we had to make our own season with an existing Doctor, which would we pick?

The second one

Great question: we’re not sure how it’s gonna go yet. We’re very much winging it! But it’s probably not going to be a full on choose your own adventure style fanfic. More like the broad strokes for stories and character developments we’d like to see in a real DW season.

My first idea for this game was to use Fifteen, as it’d give us more ‘toys’ to play with, basically, in terms of characters and plotlines. Interesting that Eight is “winning” by such a large margin! Do you see this, BBC? We still want that spinoff!

But the BBC didn’t hear mandy, instead they greenlight the Spin-Off about the Krotons
