The Cutaway Comics Thread

Cutaway Comics are the publishers behind a number of DWU comic spin offs, including (but not limited to)

  • Lytton (their first series)
  • Omega (which they made an audio adaptation of, featuring Brian Blessed)
  • Gods and Monsters (Featuring Sutekh)
  • Paradise Towers (and an audio anthology in that world as well)

They’ve also more recently announced a kickstarter, starting soon, for ‘The Happiness Patrol: Unhappily Ever After’, the pre-launch page of which is already up, and the kickstarter for which is starting soon.

What are your thoughts on non DW, DWU comics? Do they interest you?
Have you ready any of their comics? What did you think?
Isn’t Brian Blessed the perfect voice cast for Omega!?

I have the Paradise Towers comics but haven’t read them yet and am eagerly awaiting my order of Omega stuff. The Happiness Patrol comic looks brilliant.

I have had the Paradise Towers stuff on my radar for a while but I’ve never got round to checking it out - I should change that!

I have a few of these & a couple other spin-offs

  • Orcini - Orcini & Bostock from Revelation of the Daleks
  • Eldrad Must Live!

Some are by writers who have worked on Doctor Who (Bob Baker, Eric Saward). I don’t think any of them are amazing but are decent additions to the Whoniverse.

Halfway through reading Omega and it’s pretty good. The John Ridgeway art is giving me massive nostalgia for the 80s DWM comics and the tying of Omega to Minyos is a great concept. Intrigued to hear what the audio adaptation with Brian Blessed is like.

Also went in for the Kickstarter for the Happiness Patrol comic.

Finished Omega last night. More thoughts in my Omega thread but overall it was good even if, by the end of it Omega hadn’t actually featured a huge amount (he’s only really in the last instalment). I quite liked him manifesting in different forms and creating an entire civilisation through the power of his mind as that all tied rather nicely into TV Omega - and there was even a little hint towards the Gel Guards which was fun. I’m intrigued to hear how this has been adapted for audio though because a lot of it was very, very visual.

Forgot to add that I also enjoyed the backup strip in the Omega comic, The Demons of Eden. A visceral, gruesome exploration of Eden’s jungles with some gun-toting nuns!

Against my better judgment (having been burned by Kickstarters before), I went for the $230-ish bundle. I can’t think of anything I need less than Earl Grey tea and liquorice, but I couldn’t possibly miss Sophie Aldred reading a messed-up children’s book.

The Paradise Towers comics were good, though not spectacular, and I hope the upcoming sequel series will improve on them. The audio dramas were of variable writing quality, but I was stunned by how good the acting was.

I went for the £10 one. Not sure I’d get £230 Doctor Who purchase past the wife!

I’m an idiot. The read-along stretch goal was for £11,000… the Kickstarter reached 11,000 dollars. £9,000. So no CD and no expanded Tales of Terra Alpha. Too late now…
