I really want to listen to this but I think I’m going to wait for the sale being as a digital exclusive.

Listened to the Kraken of Hagwell. It was a bit underwhelming, i quite liked the ending. But it feels very drawn out on ths way to it. Probably a 6/10.

Just started it however I have a theory on what is gonna happen in the second half of each story just from listening to legacy of time and knowing that story well enough

Major Spoilers ahead: I was definitely not expecting David Tennant to actually voice 10 in this. But it turns out these stories were partially recorded during lockdown while he was still recording with them so I don’t think this is confirmation of more stories with 10 or 14 in the near future

I kinda guessed it ngl just due to it being legacy of time and ten one and two arriving together mixed in with the lockdown recording time my theory was adding up :joy:but yeah defo agree don’t think we are gonna have more 10 n 14 for a while but it’s cool how this year is the first year with every doctor from fugitive to 13th

Just starting this now.. I haven’t listen to the legacy of time set do I need to listen to that for this to make sense? - I’m about half way through part 1 of kraken of hagwell but just want to confirm if I should stop and pick up legacy of time first

Nah you can do this and then go straight into legacy of time or the other way round it’s unaffected either way

Also is it just me or did anyone else think Dr. Pennage was Liz at first? The cadence inflection etc I swore it was Liz so was surprised by the way she was acting until I realized it was a different character

Listened to The Kraken of Hagwell and quite enjoyed it, looking forward to the next story.

Now that this box set answers what the First and Second Doctors were up to, do we need an answer as to what the War and Ninth Doctors were up to? :face_with_tongue:

I preferred kraken more than heartless (.5 star higher)

Listened to The Kraken of Hagwell this morning and found it decidedly mediocre. It felt more like a missing installment of Once and Future over The Legacy of Time and the plot itself is basically Hide but with less depth. Culshaw’s good though that’s to be expected.

Honestly thats the best description I’ve heard of it. Its the dartboard mentally of O&F rather than the celebratory feel of LoT.

The Heartless Sea is stronger, mainly because it’s actually got a story in it, but again there’s some dartboard mentality. I like the idea of a living alien sea stuck on Earth splintering and that concept is enough to elevate it.

Same - the most accurate impression in the episode and it wasn’t even one :joy:

THE KRAKEN OF HAGWELL
While making a delivery, the Brigadier uncovers the Master plotting and the Doctor shouting at the sky.

Ties in vaguely to The Legacy of Time - only 6 years late - mostly thanks to David Tennant showing up for a few minutes. That this is the highlight of the story probably tells you all you need to know.

If not… the Master does something wicked, the Brigadier does something brave, the Doctor does something clever and the real monsters aren’t who you think. There are so many similarly UNIT stories I can’t find any enthusiasm for this one, even though it’s not a bad example.

I’m bored of criticising the use of impressions. I try to avoid them but Big Finish keeps making it difficult by sticking them in stories with the stars of TV’s Doctor Who. This is the second time Noonan has cropped up in a Tennant audio. In the spirit of hating the sin not the sinner I’ll just observe that Hartnell was able to say “man” without sounding like the late Queen, didn’t randomly shout out some words and could say the letter “p” without apparently exploding.

Even Culshaw’s performance is a bit odd - he also has the Brigadier randomly shout some lines. And his Delgado impression hasn’t got any better.

I sound more down on this than I feel - mostly because it didn’t really make me feel anything outside of the last five minutes. :3rd_place_medal:

THE HEARTLESS SEA
Naomi recounts a traumatic marine encounter for herself, Harry and the Troughton Doctor to a very strange psychiatrist.

This is the better of the two Legacy Chronicles by a margin, largely because it’s more vivid and unusual. The time split element adds some interesting complication to the story and there is a sense of urgency and peril that gives it impetus. Guerrier was always a master of the Chronicles and he hasn’t lost his touch.

That said, I did have some issues: mostly with the second episode which includes some lengthy chats about the logistics of the time travel elements that threaten to topple into tedious space chat.

Luckily Guerrier leavens these with some vivid moments like a quasi-regeneration and one Troughton turning out to be a monster. Plus Tennant turning up gives it an eleventh (tenth?) hour boost.

The impressions are better too, more naturalistic. Troughton is asked to do more than usual and is good at maintaining the character (if not the precise diction) of his father’s Doctor.

I was mildly uneasy about the Doctor mentioning his knowledge of Harry’s death, mostly because I think Harry is only dead in the modern TV series because of Ian Marter’s tragically young death. So having an actor who’s only playing the role because his predecessor is dead commenting about the knowledge of a fictional death necessitated by a real tragedy felt to me a meta element that - because inessential to the story being told - left me nonplussed.

Parking that, the rest of this is solid stuff and while not of the standard of - say - the Oliver Harper stories, is worth a listen. :3rd_place_medal:

Yeah was talking to others and we came to the conclusion to make it feel like a celebration we felt the 1st doctor story was fine but would change Harry and naiomi to Liv and Helen as being an original companion duo for 10+ years makes more sense to celebrate them and for them to be in a LoT if that makes sense
