Just started reading the titan comics Third Doctor mini, and realised while we’ve got a thread for the Titan Comics Backup Stories, and of course, Comics > Comic Club is going through the titan run, we don’t have a thread for titan comics more generally!
So, to get things off the ground:
Have you read any Titan Comics? Which is your favourite ongoing series? Which is your favourite mini series? Which is your favourite story overall?
Who’s your favourite Titan original companion?
What do you think of the big summer crossovers?
I’ve not read loads, but from what I have, I haven’t loved Nine’s run (with Rose and Jack) but absolutely love Ten’s (with Gabby so far). Gabby in particular is a really cool companion and I’m looking forward to reading more of her!
I read all of nine’s run, which I thought was ok, and most of twelve’s run, which I’ve really enjoyed so far. Although the eleventh doctor ones seem interesting I just can’t get past the art style. From what I have read I really like Alice, so I might give it another go. I’ve read the entire tenth doctor run, and I am absolutely obsessed with it. My avatar is from that comic. I could write an essay about that comic. Unsurprisingly my favorite companions are Gabby and Cindy. I haven’t been able to read the thirteenth or fifteenth doctor ones yet, but would really like to. I agree with DontBlink, Fugitive and Missy are really great miniseries.
Is that controversial? That’s my favorite of the lot
10, 11, and 13 aren’t generally my favorite doctors, but they have easily my favorite comic series, and I’m still gutted that 10’s run ended where it did
Personally, I think 11’s run is overall pretty weak, it tries to emulate 11’s era in its storytelling and it just doesn’t work for me most of the time. I like a lot of what it tries to do, but yeah, overall, not for me unfortunately
That’s fair. I massively prefer 11’s characterization in the comics to how he is on TV, and I think the more whimsical style of his era lends itself perfectly to comics
I’ve read them all. I think the Eight and Three miniseries were my favorite, followed by the Tenth Doctor series. I liked the story in the Eleventh Doctor run, but the art is awful.
I have very recently popped my Comics cherry, once I realized that it wasn’t all just John and Gillian and evil scarecrows from the 60s. Doctor Who: Too Hot For TV, a great podcast about the Extended Universe, turned me onto them with their review of The Heralds of Destruction, a Third Doctor comic. It was great, I loved it, the twist (I won’t spoil but if you know it, bloody hell) was insane, the depiction of Delgado’s Master gave me all the warm fuzzies, the COVER is sublime. Yeah, I feel like I might end up hoovering these up after that. If anyone has any further recommendations I’d happily take them.
We’ve got the Comics > Comic Club if you want to browse that. I’d say just pick a run and go for it. There’s an extended run for Nine-Thirteen, and then miniseries and events. The events are fairly stand-alone, but do feature the Titan-original companions.
I’ve read the Eighth and Fifteenth Doctor miniseries, Empire of the Wolf and the first three volumes of the Thirteenth Doctor ongoing series (A New Beginning, Hidden Human History and Old Friends). The Eighth and Fifteenth Doctor stories are the standouts for me - they’re both utterly fantastic, and I thought they each delivered really compelling new spins on those characters (and Eight gets another companion!). The three Thirteenth Doctor volumes are also really good, and I think they absolutely nail the characterisation of the Fam in series 11. Empire of the Wolf is the weak link - I love the idea of an Eight/Eleven multi-Doctor story, but it also shoehorns in Rose for some reason, and the whole thing was clearly done on a limited budget, as there is a lot of repeated and traced art throughout.
I’ve got some of the Twelfth Doctor volumes and the next Thirteen one, which I need to get around to reading. I’d also be interested to read the Third, Fourth and Seventh Doctor miniseries.
I haven’t read this one, but I did unfortunately find out about the twist a while back - I agree it’s a stonker! Reading your thoughts on it, I’ll try and get around to it sooner rather than later. It’s a shame we don’t have miniseries for the other classic Doctors, I’d love to see what could be done with One or Five, who don’t have much in the way of comics that I’m aware of.
One through Four have a lot because of the TV Comic & Countdown strips. Plus Four has all the DWM strips from when it was weekly. Five and Six have so few because they only have the DWM strips and only three years worth. Seven has more because his DWM strips ran from 1987-1996 and Eight has them because his ran from 1996-2005. Nine has DWM and Titan (I don’t know if he had any DWA), and then Ten jumps with DWM, DWA, Titan and IDW.
I need to get back to reading these for Comic Club as I’ve fallen a long way behind. The Eleventh Doctor run really turned me off them. As others upthread have said, I don’t like the art style and the storyline involving the Cabal, the Squire and Daak just felt grimy and I didn’t hold with the characterisation of 11 either.
I liked the last couple of 12th Doctor ones I read though, School of Death and whatever follows it.
