So because of what I had said in the 61st Anniversary Quiz, about how if I made a quiz it would be difficult questions, I wanted to challenge myself to create tough quiz questions for a Doctor Who serial, starting with the first one. I have 5 questions per episode and a couple of bonus multiple answer questions, I think ranging from medium difficulty to very difficult if you’re not reading the transcript and the wiki as I was when writing them. If people like this, I could continue my way through in my spare time.
The Questions and Answers:
- Susan is listening to John Smith and the Common Men when Ian and Barbara talk to her. John Smith was a stage name for what actual name? Aubrey Waites.
- Additionally, what band did “John Smith” start his career with? Chris Waites and the Carollers.
- Susan does not know how British currency works in the first episode, believing them to be on the decimal system. How many years early was she, if this episode takes place in 1963? 8 years (Decimalisation was in 1971).
- Susan is given a problem involving the main three dimensions (length, width, height) and can’t solve it because of missing dimensions. Ian understands time must be the fourth, but Susan states the fifth dimension to be space. Why does that not make any sense? Space would be formed by the combination of the first three dimensions, length, width, and height.
- When we see the Doctor for the first time, he was wearing a hat. What is the name for the kind of hat he was wearing? Astrakhan (also known as Karakul, Qaraqul, Uzbek hat, or Jinnah cap).
- Za is the tribe’s leader, Hur is his mate, and Kal is the one trying to take over the tribe. What is the name of Hur’s father, the only other named caveman in this story? Horg.
- Famously, the Doctor mentions that the TARDIS camouflaging system wasn’t working, but earlier, what piece of TARDIS equipment did he say was also not functioning? The Yearometer.
- The Doctor is captured after he does a rather unusual activity for the character, what was he doing? Smoking a pipe.
- The cavemen worship a god they call Orb. What is Orb? The Sun.
- The Cave of Skulls is so named because it was full of skulls and other bones. What did all the skulls have in common, aside from being human skulls? They were split open.
- “Fear makes companions of all of us, Miss Wright,” is the famous line by the Doctor. How, as we find out much later, did the Doctor learn this lesson originally? Clara Oswald told it to him when he was a child, believing her to be a dream.
- What task did the Doctor assign Barbara when they were trying to figure out how to escape the cave? Focus on remembering the way back to the TARDIS.
- Why does the Old Woman free the TARDIS team? She doesn’t want the tribe to learn fire
- What dead animal does Barbara trip over, alerting Za and Hur to their position? A Boar.
- The Doctor picks up a rock clearly to bash the injured Za’s skull in. What excuse does he use when Ian stops him and asks what he’s doing? He says he wanted to get Za to use the rock to draw a map back to the TARDIS.
- Why does Kal think Za’s knife is a bad knife? It doesn’t show what it does
- Why, according to Ian, is the firemaker the least important person in their “tribe?” Because everyone knows how to make fire.
- Za is played by Derek Newark. When he returns to Doctor Who, which character does he play? Greg Sutton (in Inferno)
- The Old Woman is played by Eileen Way. When she returns to Doctor Who, which character does she play? Karela (in The Creature from the Pit). Bonus point for an old woman in Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.
- Hur is played by Alethea Charlton. When she returns to Doctor Who, which character does she play? Edith (in The Time Meddler)
Bonus #1. The three TARDIS travelers other than the Doctor had different working names that were changed before the final version. 1 point for each you can name. Bridget or Biddy (Susan), Lola McGovern (Barbara Wright), Cliff (Ian)
Bonus #2. Aside from the first one, name each individual part to this story. 1 point for each. “The Cave of Skulls,” “The Forest of Fear,” “The Firemaker.”
