Honestly, it doesn’t even feel like it was worth announcing. Was it mistimed for Instagram? Are they going to ‘stagger’ announcements? It’s a bit weird. But, frankly, I can’t imagine anyone giving much of a damn that Susan Twist is coming back. It’s on a par with “Colonel Ibrahim is returning.”
RTD and others have commented but idk like I just happened to go on Insta when it was posted?? I’ve turned notifs on now I’m just confused as to why it’s only there rn. Could be as you say but it’s just so odd.
Maybe they’d give a damn if she was a well-developed character and not a Theresa May reference
Ofc there’s a way to make political characters but she was a bit too blunt. Kids wouldn’t have picked it up either.
But hiring her into UNIT just like every other character makes the world feel a bit small imo.
Could be that they didn’t want to give a big reveal, but wanted to remind people a new season was coming out…
They should have brought Helen A back for a Margaret Thatcher reference instead…
(And the tardis.guide page for Happiness Patrol has a character listed for Helen A’s dog but not her, @shauny ?)
that sweet, sweet 120K salary…
And I can make tea, so I’m more qualified then Susan Twist.
Did not even know that it would return then. But it is a bigger show globally than Doctor Who, and the first season got lots of awards. I don’t think that it is a fair comparison.
It is not strange that there is no hype for DW s2 yet; they have barely started marketing it. We don’t even have a release date.
I never meant to compare, I just think it’s a bad idea to air it in April/May.
Same with last year, with it airing close to the Fallout show.
Ideally, you’d want to air it in a period where there are no other big sci-fi/horror shows going on on other streaming sites. Especially with how Disney very obviously wanted to get more American viewers involved, who would have to prioritize certain subscriptions. Considering TLOU also will most likely come out every other week, Americans are likely going to end up choosing between one or the other subscription service. Not saying they share the exact same audience but it’s something I’d be aware of bts.
Though, in the back of my mind, there’s no reason the show can’t achieve the same levels of hype and intrigue that it once did imo, other than the writing quality and the marketing. It is an older IP than both of those shows. And considering Doctor Who is my favourite thing ever, I haven’t actually felt any hype for years with the trailers. Writing quality wise (of the last season exclusively), I much prefer Fallout and TLOU series (but neither are as good as Torchwood Big Finish ).
Plus, just look at the trailer views on YouTube. They’re…low and it breaks my heart.
I sadly don’t agree.
The show has declined a lot since the 2000s, for several factors. And I think part of it is inevitable - the “current” show is 20 years old this year, for one thing, and audiences have grown tired or grown out of it. And the show’s had 2 major ‘relaunches’ in the last 10 years alone, and I don’t think either has been the major success they truly hoped for. I think the show needs a rest for people to truly miss it again before coming back with a bang, with someone who has an incredibly bold vision, ala 2005.
I’m not saying the show can’t get good audience ratings again, but I don’t think it’s a show that’ll ever recapture the heights and peaks of the mid 2000s again unless it takes a rest or someone comes in and really kicks it up the arse.
I’m probably wrong, but I would imagine the airdate is decided more by the BBC than Disney and they are not going to care about Fallout or The Last of Us. The audience cross over there is going to be minimal. As fans we often forget that Doctor Who is a programme not targetted at science fiction fans but at a general audience. Fallout and The Last of Us are targetted very obviously at gamers and sci fi fans. They aren’t even close to the family audience wanted for Doctor Who. Disney may well want to appeal to a US audience but, again, are they targetting the same audience as those shows? Part of me doubts that.
I did not see any talk about that show. But the thing is that there is no window for that. There is allways other shows that air at the same time with bigger marketing budgets.
It will not be as big as the most popular TV shows. It was not even that big during the big hype with 10 and 11. It has allways been a niche show outside of the UK.
I don’t think it should be cancelled nor go on a hiatus though. Because I don’t think we’d get another revival.
I think with new writers, better scripts, it can quite easily become fresh and popular. But imo bringing back RTD, Tennant, Donna, relying on things that happened 20 years ago is the wrong move if you want to create something for a new generation. So I’d say how the show fell off gradually is in part due to this reliance on older stories (self-sabotage) and due to the rise of the anti-woke mob.
But, watching the Classic era, it is nice to see old companions again. I wouldn’t say it’s blatant fan-service, because it narratively all makes sense, (eg. Companions joining support-groups, meeting eachother, joining UNIT) but not the best route if you want to engage new viewers who will rave online about the show
Engaging with the 2005 stuff now does make it out to be intensely popular. And much more fun with the experiences and the promos.
Do we reckon the midnight releases will be dropped due to fan reception / the christmas ep being back to normal? afaik it was a decent time for america either way?
So it’s failing because it’s appealing to the “general audience” and not Big Finish hyper-fans /hj lol
I’m fully expecting midnight releases again. Christmas was likely different because of its event status in the UK (and Ncuti’s first Christmas special was transmitted the same too).
But then we get into the narrative of whether the show is ‘failing’. It’s been ‘failing’ since Moffat took over depending on who you listen and it most certainly died a terrible death during Chibnall’s run.
But weirdly, the show’s still here.
The failure of the show is always overstated.
i expect so unfortunately. awful decision. one of the worst in the shows history imo!
Could be worse. Could be one of those “entire series is dropped on streaming in one go, and then broadcast weekly on TV” things
