Story Variations - how best to handle these?

OK I think I’ve linked up all variations I can find.

So all that is left to do is the logic that says “completed a variation of this”.

This is where it gets complicated…

Question:

Let’s say that three versions of a story exist:

  1. The original
  2. An audio soundtrack
  3. An animated reconstruction

There are a few ways I can go about this:

  1. If someone completes/rates ANY of these, mark ALL of them as “completed a variation”
  2. If someone rates the ORIGINAL, then don’t touch the VARIATIONS
  3. If someone completes/rates ONE of the variations, say the animation, then mark just the ORIGINAL as “completed a variation” and leave the soundtrack uncompleted.

Which is preferable? You can always still complete it later, it’s just whether or not it should be marked as complete and removed from listings when you’re showing only incomplete things.

I’d do a poll but the three options aren’t really mutually exclusive… need to hear your thoughts!

(with Books/Audiobooks, I plan to always mark the OTHER one as “completed a variation” if you’ve completed one)

I think that I would prefer 2

2 and 3?

Because 2 on it’s own is how it is now, lol

Like I said, they aren’t 3 different options but 3 different things that can happen depending on what you do

I probably explained it badly

I kinda like three since the original doesn’t always exist anymore, and that way it still counts the original if they took the approach I did in my watchthrough with missing episodes. Take Daleks Master Plan, I didn’t just listen to the whole soundtrack CD. I would listen to episode 1, watch episode 2, listen to episodes 3 & 4, watch episode 5, etc. This seems to be the best option to accomodate this approach.

I read it quickly as well. I feel like 1 should not happen but 2 and 3 should.

2 and 3 feel like the best approach to me as well.

Yeah, I’d say 2 and 3 too. I’m like Darth in that now, with the animations, I tend to mix and match the existing episodes with the animation and if I’m watching existing footage then I’m watching ‘the original’ so I’d want that ticked off. But I would definitely leave the soundtrack as something separate - and in the case of those we multiple soundtracks/animations. You can always skip them if you don’t intend on ever doing them.

Quick question:

The Stuff of Legend.

Should I have the “Studio Version” as the original story, seeing as that was released first and more people have completed it, then the Live Experience and Live Recording as variations?

That feels like the most logical solution to me.

Yes that sounds great!

OK, I decided to just publish what I have rather than go through the staging server, as it requires a reindex and that takes AGES on staging.

I may regret this… let’s hope it’s bug-free

So here’s what has changed:

  • When you complete a variation of a story, then on the card for the original story, the little variation icon is added:

This shows that whilst you haven’t completed this story, you’ve completed a variation of it. You’re still free to complete and rate this story too.

This icon was a quick and easy placement, I may alter it in the future.

Clicking it takes you to the story page and scrolls down to the list of variations.

  • For the purpose of the ‘My Next Story’, the ‘Character Tracker’, and also ‘Badges’, if you complete a variation then it’s as if you completed the original. It also knows the difference between rating a variation and just completing it, so that works for badges.
  • I haven’t fully tested how stats works, need to keep looking into that. But the idea is that if you complete an animation, there should be no need to ALSO complete the original, so stats and diaries should be better
  • Patron Filters will also allow you to filter stories by “Completed Variation” (and those stories WON’T be in “Uncompleted” lists), and “Rated Variation” (and those won’t show in “unrated”). Should clean things up. This is what is currently reindexing and takes a while to populate!:

Along with the visual update that includes the buttons, it should now be lots easier to navigate variations!

Also, an idea I had: some people, like @Tian, have completed lots of audiobooks but the audiobooks aren’t on the site, so he has marked the Book as completed. I’m going to add a button that lets you transfer your rating (including the original date) from one variation to another, which should be useful when all the audiobooks are added!

Phew! Lots of work on these done, hope it’s all fine, let me know if there are any issues

Reindexing (for the Patron filters) should take an hour or more.

 you’re the best, Shauny, I’ll find this really useful too. It all looks great!

That looks great! I’m going to give it all a go to see how well it works.

This is indeed a useful feature! This site just keeps getting better!

Just looking in my animated episodes that I still have to watch, it says Power of the Doctor Special Edition but I’ve completed the normal edition. “Completed Variation” doesn’t show up here, but it does for the same episode in the TV section for Classic Who.

Completing the original should have no bearing on the variations at all.

Yep, it only shows on the original that you’ve completed a variation. Not on any of the variations.

Does that make sense?

I’m more meaning when I’m filtering, if I go in TV and filter then I can see Completed Variation, but not in Animated. Is this how its supposed to be?

Can you send me the link to the page you’re talking about? Not sure I understand

So I’ve completed Power of the Daleks animated version, but in the animated page its showing I still have to do this variation.

Whereas on the 2nd Doctor classic who page, it says I’ve completed the variation which is correct.
