Lower Decks - 10/10 - Why did she have to die, nooooo, the best episode of S7.
The show “Lower Decks” was explicitly named after and inspired by that episode.
Yeah. Brilliant episode that one.
Thine Own Self - 6.5/10
Masks was 9/10,Sick premise loved it
If you ever need an unpopular opinion to share, you found one.
Wasnt a fan of Eye of Beholder,I’d give it 4/10,it was just boring and i did not enjoy it.
I’m sure I’ll read this whole thread at some point, but I wanted to jump in and say that I’m a Trekkie from way back. I’ve seen all the episodes through the first season or so of Discovery (plus a couple seasons of Picard) and all of the films, plus read maybe 20-ish books years ago. One of the aspects of my publication order media project (feel free to ask for details, lol) that most excites me is being able to experience Trek all over again, this time with the comics and books where they were released.
Starting a rewatch of Voyager. I forgot it opened with an opening crawl. Where does Voyager sit in relation to DS9?
Voyager S1-5 run about concurrently with DS9 S3-7 (2371-2375)
Finished “The Caretaker”. I do think Voyager is my favorite Trek show. It’s the one that I watched a lot of both on Spike TV and on a handful of VHS tapes that held two episodes each. Looking forward to continuing this trek.
Maybe nostalgia and the like such as that helps with Voyager. Maybe part of my disappointment with Voyager is from not having watched it when it came out or having any sort of memory associated with it. Or it’s by comparison to DS9 which I think was doing far better Trek at the same time. I guess I’m glad some people see more in it than I do, even if I don’t understand what they like so much about it.
I think for me, the reason I love Voyager is partly nostalgia, but also because I really enjoy the characters and, especially when I was younger, I liked that there was a series arc of trying to get home.
DS9 is good, but for me it takes a while to get there. I do need to pick iy back up with Season 3 onwards because once you get into the Dominion War it sounds fascinating. TNG is good too, but I think with TNG the entirely self-contained nature of the episodes and the five-year mission hurts it i my eyes. TOS is interesting, and being of a different time to the three 1990s shows gives it a unique flavor, but I find myself loosing interest in watching more a lot faster. I enjoyed the series opener of Enterprise, but then was bored with the next episode. I haven’t dabbled in the new stuff at all.
I’ve said before that I disagree with the general sentiment that DS9 takes a while to get good. It’s not as good as it would become, and probably isn’t quite as good as TNG S6-7 at the same time, but I think those first two seasons are definitely good Trek. It’s doing a lot of the foundational work and worldbuilding of Bajor, Cardassia, the station and the Federation’s role when it comes to the post-occupation politics, early explorations to and visits from the Gamma Quadrant, and yes, eventually the introduction of the Dominion. Stuff that’s introduced at the beginning is still relevant in the middle and end of the series. I guess if one isn’t particularly interested in those things, maybe it loses some people.
As for characters, the ones in Voyager never really spoke to me, they feel very bare-bones, not very interesting, and I don’t see a lot of development from them over the course of the series. Janeway, Seven, and The Doctor probably the only ones I’d say are an exception to that, though Janeway is wildly inconsistent. Meanwhile, the DS9 characters feel a lot more layered and nuanced from the start, and they pretty much all have well-defined development and arcs across the series. I think they all feel like real people, and you pretty much have a general sense of what any pair of them think of each other. The only ones I think they could have done better with in the early two seasons are Julian and Jadzia, but even they get their development. But Sisko, Kira, Odo, Quark, O’Brien, Garak, Dukat, Winn, all just great from the beginning.
The story arc of Voyager doesn’t convince me because, again probably something I’ve said before, it doesn’t feel like anything has lasting consequences, everything is back to normal by the next episode. That was a conscious decision to contrast with DS9’s more serialized approach, but I think to Voyager’s detriment.
Definitely revisit Enterprise. I’m surprised you dropped it simply from one episode that bored you. That one does take a bit of time to really get going, but I think the first two seasons there do have their share of good episodes. Enterprise is cool because of the way you get to see the origins of the Federation, and why Starfleet in the other series has the rules and regulations it does. This crew isn’t perfect, they make mistakes, but they learn. The third and fourth seasons are excellent. I can understand TOS, being rather old, to not be as much to the tastes of today’s audience for various reasons. New Trek, a rather mixed bag, but I’d say worth dipping into, though I’d say most of them are better with good foreknowledge of the classic (66-05) Trek series, especially Lower Decks. Discovery, by intent, is completely watchable to anyone, Strange New Worlds as well, though some Discovery is good to have first, so I’d say Discovery is probably the place to start with new Trek.
Personally, I started with Assimilation², kept getting email updates from a Star Trek writer, and then cracked and binged both Discovery[1] and Lower Decks (with the Strange New Worlds crossover) in the week long free trial. Both shows in a week.
Now taking a break and trying to get into the other crossovers, or I might just watch a random series. Currently on the wait for Starfleet Academy anyway. Also, I watched that Spongebob crossover advert and immediately binged all the other Paramount Mountain adverts I could find.
Interested in the Lower Decks card game so that might be the next Star Trek I do. Also been considering reading the comics; that choose-your-own-adventure one looks fun.
I didn’t like Discovery much, which I could and will, if prompted, get into. Preferred Lower Decks immensely more. I might even say to start with Lower Decks, if asked by someone who doesn’t want to get the Doctor Who crossover comic from their local library. ↩︎
Started DS9 last week, watched 3 episodes scores so far are
- Emissary - 8/10
- Past Prologue - 7/10
- A Man Alone - 6/10
Oof. Early DS9 is rough, especially when you’ve watched it all. It’s one of the very few instances, along with TNG 1, that I skip on re-watches.
But if you’ve never seen it before its some solid Trek.
So I’ve been wondering…is there a website like tardis.guide for Star Trek? A place where you can find all the media listed, collections, active forums, etc.? Once I reach September 1966 with Marvel comics and Doctor Who, I’ll be jumping into a Trek rewatch plus experiencing the comics and nearly all the books for the first time.
