Star Trek: General discussion

I love Spock’s Brain, if only because it absolutely baffles anyone I explain the plot to. I made a few memes about it back in the day…

Edit: found it!

Having recently rewatched the series, it’s amazing how many of the women appearing in the show were clad in outfits that fit this description. They showed a lot of skin. For a show that supposedly presented a progressive view of equality, it objectified women a lot.

I’m at an age now where my first thought is “Ooh, put a cardigan on, dear, you’ll catch your death of cold.”

I just rewatched DS9: Duet. Hard to describe it in any way other than “masterpiece.” It’s a brilliant episode.

A little over halfway through the first season of Prodigy and it’s a lot better than I thought it would be

It’s a great show. It’s a kids’ show, and you can tell at times, but it’s honestly never condescending, very rarely immature, and never a struggle to watch as an adult viewer. It’s a very intelligently written show.

Yeah, if you’re a little over halfway through the first season, things are starting to get good. I really like “Time Amok”, and “A Moral Star” was a great two parter. At the time it aired, there was mid season break right after that.

To be honest, they probably could have called season 1 of Prodigy seasons 1 + 2, and then made season 2 seasons 3+4…

I want to get into star trek where’s the best place to start?
Had a dvd of the orginal series years ago
I do wanna give Voyager a go as the cast looks intresting to me.

The Original Series, Next Generation, Voyager, Deep Space Nine and Enterprise are each their own thing with little bits of crossover. I don’t know about the newer stuff.

I love Voyager, but am apparently in the minority. Deep Space Nine is much more serialized, especially with season 3 onwards.

Oh, back when Voyager actually aired, I stopped watching around the episode where Neelix got his lungs stolen.

I appreciate it more these days, though there are still occasional episodes that are pretty bad, and I don’t like how it has a permanent status quo reset button pressed after most episodes. I enjoy it overall, though.

Discovery, well, I really didn’t like it, so I’m not the one to talk to about it.

Strange New Worlds was great. It is a spinoff of Discovery, but I feel like the important bits you need to know from discovery were covered in it. It is, of course, a prequel to TOS. It does have a one episode crossover with Lower Decks.

Lower Decks makes a lot of references to practically every Star Trek show out there, including the animated series (the one right after TOS), and might not be the best starting point. (Loved the DS9 episode.)

Prodigy was aimed at kids that haven’t watched Star Trek before, and could potentially be a starting point. It does have a fair amount of crossover with Voyager and TNG. (It is pretty much a followup to what happened after Voyager, and several TNG/Voyager characters show up.)

Haven’t watched much of Picard. Haven’t watched Section 31, but I hear bad things. Think it’d heavily rely on knowing Discovery, anyways…

Voyager is my confort Trek. We briefly had some VHS tapes of it (with two episodes per tape) and I watched a lot when it was on Spike TV. I might’ve seen some episodes when it was aired on UPN in the late 1990s too.

Personally, I recommend starting with TOS. TNG, ENT, or SNW are also good starting points.

Honestly, one of the things that pushed me to go more into watching Voyager was just simply how good Janeway is in Prodigy.

Another was that after starting Discovery, after two episodes or so, I disliked it so much that I rewatched a bunch of season 1 of Voyager instead before picking back up where I left off on Discovery.

I highly recommend Strange New Worlds! It’s technically adjacent to a lot of important lore stuff but the show gives you all the information you need. The cast is really strong and the show doesn’t shy away from current world issues, but still let’s itself explore the silly side of sci-fi when the crew need a break.

I’d say start with TOS. Pretty much any of the good starting points are going to be rough starts, but TOS I think has the better first season compared to TNG. Some dated moments, especially in the first few episodes, but the back half of the season is some of the best. Watch in production order for best results.

Moat Star Trek has somewhat weak first seasons and then improves with time.
I would say Strange New Worlds may be the best place to start as it has had two very strong seasons thus far. I believe it gives you all the knowledge you need as you watch it, but you would definitely benefit from familiarity with The Original Series and Discovery, which it is a spin off from, but I believe Strange New Worlds does give enough context in itself.
I believe Deep Space 9 is a great place to start too. I got a friend watching it as his first Trek series and he greatly loved it. It has a healthy amount of serialisation mixed into its episodic structure, more so than its contemporary shows which enables a lot of meaningful development to occus which the others have but not as much, and it also gives enough context to stuff though again, familiarity will be rewarding.
I’d say they are the two best starting points from new and old Trek.
Though you could always start with the original series and see it all develop! I remember coming home from school and watching TOS and TNG on DVD and loving them, so they carry a lot of nostalgia for me.

Honestly, as much as it’s the best one, I wouldn’t start someone with Deep Space Nine. I think that one has some benefit of being familiar with the world already, knowing the dynamics of the major powers as established by TNG. It’s also atypical of most Trek series, and I’d think something more typical would make a better introduction. It can be done of course, as shown by your example, but it’s not what I’d recommend.

If you are going to start with new Trek, Strange New Worlds is 100% the one to start with, but maybe I’m an old-fashioned fan, I’d start someone in classic Trek first.

Honestly with how common it is for series to start out rough, I’d maybe start someone with just an example of how good it can be first (though not the best of the best, let them build up to it) see if they like that, and then start from the beginning.

@uss-genderprise Moving our v serious discussion here because it’s funny to think about: which Doctor would dump Julian Bashir as companion the fastest?

I think Four would leave him in a deserted planet w no water. Seven would keep him for psychological torture.

Because this is Star Trek, my mind jumped to entirely the wrong Seven…

Bashir is great, but I think you have a point here. He would not get along well with Doctor Who.
