Spooky Season Movie Marathon!

Spent a couple of days this week at Grimmfest, a yearly horror film festival in Manchester, and I caught three film premiers

Motherwitch - a super atmospheric folk horror from Cyprus. Really good set design and acting, but could’ve amped up the horror aspect a little
They Always Come At Night - especially enjoyed this, it was a small cast in one setting, all of which you grow to really love by the end, and a super creepy vibe to the whole thing
Boxcutter - the less said about Boxcutter the better

I love these kinds of festivals and it’s great to see SOME brilliant indie horror and to be surrounded by so many other fans

Last film for the weekend. Watched a Hammer Horror for the 50s; The Abominable Snowman. Peter Cushing was such an amazing actor. Imagine what he could have brought to the role of the Doctor if he got to portray the character on tv instead of just two films.

Continuing on with the marathon, for the 1960s I watch a classic episode of Scooby Doo Where Are You?

And for the 70s, I watched The Rocky Horror Picture Show in honor of the late Tim Curry. Personally I think the live stage show works better than the film, and while the songs are fun the plot is a bit of mess, but it’s worth turning your brain off for a couple of hours to see the actors hamming it up.

another banger Amicus portmanteau. all four stories are great, but especially the third one. good for Halloween and just when you want to watch something light and spooky

Was sick home from work today so I decided to watch another leg of the marathon. This time for the 80s I went back to nostalgia and watched Garfield’s Halloween Adventure.

I miss animated holiday tv specials. At best you’ll get a Halloween or Fall themed episode within a series line up, but you rarely ever get stand alone specials anymore.

After marathoning Friday the 13th and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre films earlier this year I’ve set out today on another horror movie marathon celebrate the spooky season. I’m a lot more busy and also tired with uni work currently, so instead of the mammoth 12 or 9 films in one day like I’ve done before, I’ve settled for the 5 film Phantasm franchise. I hardly know anything about these films which is why I’m so excited, I’m discovering a whole new series of films as I make my through them all today[1]

  1. completely ignoring any work I have to do I have so much work to do this probably wasn’t a good idea in hindsight ↩︎

Was off work again today and watched Casper for the 90s slot. I hadn’t seen it in years, and while it was better than I remember the jokes are very dated.

We went to see Clayface!

I watched a lot of it through my fingers (my many fingers) like I was @Owen watching an episode of Class!

Some really gross body horror that I don’t vibe with, but on the whole a very enjoyable experience. Great film!

Not your typical superhero film. Nobody was quipping, and not one person said “he’s right behind me, isn’t he?”, (a quote which would have elevated it to a 10/10)

I’m actually really hyped for this. I’m not huge on horror but I think this is a level I can really get behind, if it has a decent plot behind all the horror elements. I’ll be seeing it next week.

Finally got around to seeing Paranorman. It’s been on my to do list forever and I decided to use the 2010s portion of the marathon to give it a watch.

The movie was cute. Something about stop motion animation lends itself well to spooky stories. It’s practically a subgenre by this point.
