Space-faring Spheres - the Mechanoids

The Chase saw the introduction of the show’s latest attempt to have a monster success story to rival the Daleks. The Voord and Zarbi had failed to set the world alight but there were high hopes for the spheroid robots who debuted in this story.

What are your thoughts on these robotic caretakers? Did their second life in the comic strips inspire you or their appearance in the more recent Dalek animated series which formed part of the Time Lord Victorious epic? What about their foray into audio as the eponymous Juggernauts?

I have to admit to being rather fond of them and I’ve often toyed with getting hold of Character Options rather lovely action figures or dreamed about hunting down the elusive 60s toy versions.

Clunky. Stupid. Annoying voices. Very 60s. Very Terry Nation. That’s what I think of them. I have no idea how anyone could think that they’d be even remotely able to rival the Daleks in popularity. I’d take a Zarbi action figure over a Mechanoid any day!

Clunky, stupid, annoying voices, very 60s, very Terry Nation, very comic strip. That’s why I bloody love them.

Many have already pointed out that they feel and look very clunky and I could only agree upon this. I really dislike their Voices as well. That said despite disliking a lot about them, there are a few Things, which I really enjoy about them. Their Look has something special to it, it’s not a favorite of mine, but one that I just can’t keep my Eyes away, it’s charming in its own Way. Their Relationship with the Daleks is also interesting to see over the Years, despite really not being a Fan of the animated DALEKS! Series, I thought they were one of the better Aspect.

As far as their Stories goes, I am not too big on the Chase, there are Aspects I love in that Story and some Aspects which I rarely don’t. I also listened to the Audio the Juggernauts which uses them uniquely, which I don’t want to spoil.

That all said, I am not surprised they weren’t brought back to the TV Show, and frankly they are very low on my List for returns from the Classic Series.
