This is going off tangent a bit and I think maybe we should have a thread for it but my thought is this:
Yaz is in love with the Doctor? 100% yes, I thought it was quite clear from very early on.
The Doctor loves Yaz as more than a friend? Absolutely should not have been done, there is nothing special about Yaz IMO that puts her above any other of the Doctor’s last companions (the opposite actually), so I don’t see why the Doctor would be in love with her that way. Let it stay unrequited! I didn’t like the talk in Sea Devils because the Doctor suggested it was more than that.
But that’s just my opinions and I know some people love the 13 and Yaz ship, and I’m happy for them, although think it was rushed and handled badly by the writers. If they were going to do it properly it should have been the focus of Flux, but it was all over before it started in LotSD
But the Tenth Doctor never indicated that he loved Rose more than a friend. He almost said he loved her when he was saying goodbye and would never see her again.
Thirteen went way further, suggesting that if she were a human she’d be with Yaz.
I’m with @shauny on this. It wasn’t really indicated.
I think the Doctor/Rose romance was occasionally implied and then fandom just ran wild with it (which is why they made a full scale Doctor toy for Rose to keep in Pete’s world).
He definitely “partied” with Madame de Pompadour with Rose very close by. And when Pete’s world closed up again he ruined Queen Bess’ nickname very soon thereafter.
The Doctor totally timed his final words to Rose in Doomsday to get out of a sticky situation
Of course, Ten loved Rose! He treated Martha as a rebound just for that reason. Also his eyes in Day of the Doctor when he realized who the moment looked like.
Thirteen never hinted in any way that Yaz’s feelings were mutual.
But the clearest love between a doctor and their companion is of course 2 and Jamie.
I get no added value from shipping characters.
(And have no clue how people saw Yaz and Thirteen as anything other than friends until Survivors of the Flux, or how Tegan and Nyssa were something other than “found sisters”/friends)
But the fact that the Yaz and Thirteen stuff was added because they became aware that their “ship” was a thing in parts of fandom is just odd to me.
I don’t dislike the little unrequited love arc with Yaz from the last part of Flux onwards, but I see no indications that they should be an item beforehand (other than Yaz’s mom asking if they are a couple)
Nah I disagree - all those quotes show that Rose is someone the Doctor cares for deeply and he considers her a friend he loves but it’s never any more than that from his side.
Whereas Thirteen directly says:
DOCTOR: if it was going to be anyone, it’d be you. But I can’t.
“If it was going to be anyone” errr what about Rose and Martha and Amy and Clara?! No, Yaz is the most important person apparently. Yaz who we barely know anything about because there were multiple other companions taking all the screen time.
DOCTOR: So, the year five billion, the sun expands, the Earth gets roasted. ROSE: That was our first date. DOCTOR: We had chips.
“So, that’s the trap. Or the test, or the final judgment, I don’t know. But if I kill you, I kill her. Except that implies in this big grand scheme of Gods and Devils that she’s just a victim. But I’ve seen a lot of this universe. I’ve seen fake gods and bad gods and demi-gods and would-be gods, and out of all that, out of that whole pantheon, if I believe in one thing, just one thing, I believe in her.”
“If it was going to be anyone, it would be you” - confession of love and makes it seem like Yaz is the most important romantic person the Doctor has ever known.
“We had chips” is him knowing what she’s talking about when she mentions that it was their “first date” and not only not shutting down that reading of that experience but encouraging it in reminiscing about it in the same fond way she’s doing
Well Ten is a bit cheeky and he leads her on a little with his wording I admit but he never goes out and actually admits anything more than just friendship
Even in the final moment he doesn’t say it (there’s actually a way of interpreting it that he deliberately cuts the connection so he doesn’t have to say it…)
He doesn’t go out and say “well I’d marry you but then you’d get really old and I wouldn’t and that would be weird” which is basically what Thirteen says.
DOCTOR: I don’t age. I regenerate. But humans decay; you wither and you die. Imagine watching that happen to someone that you-- [breaks off] ROSE: What, Doctor? DOCTOR: You can spend the rest of your life with me, but I can’t spend the rest of mine with you. I have to live on. Alone. That’s the curse of the Time Lords.
Haha yes I did think of that quote when I was writing that but forgot which story it was from.
Okay you maybe have a point but I still say Thasmin was 0-1000 with very little build up (13 had 0 clue that Yaz liked her “like that” in Eve of the Daleks) whereas the reason you can find all these quotes is because the Doctor and Rose was expertly crafted across three seasons and was infinitely better.
But still he never actually said it. Even in that quote he stops himself from saying it. He’s protecting her.
