As with my Who marathon, my Bond marathon has slowed right down due to being stupidly busy but I’ve just finished the OHMSS novel before I move onto the From Russia with Love film.
I’m really looking forward to FRWL - it’s my favourite Connery Bond film by a mile and I think it’s got such atmosphere and a real identity separate from just being a Bond film, as I think my favourites tend to.
And to think of all the obstacles going on, the fact it ended up as good as it is is almost a miracle! Not just the various accidents but the fact that apparently they seemingly forgot they’d killed off a character already only to have him pop up again afterwards and it was only caught in editing.
But then another edit they felt was necessary in post production led to the tradition of the pre-credits sequence between the gunbarrel and main titles.
Behind the scenes and on screen, From Russia with Love is - for me - one for the richest entries in the whole canon.
Got bored and ran all 25 films (Eon only, but the other two would be NSNA 26th and CR 27th) through a preference revealer. Resulted in a vote change on here. Rather surprised that 4/5 Craig films made my top 10. Maybe he’s the Bond I grew up with and saw in theaters, maybe it’s just the Bond era intended for my generation and it works for me as a result, but I do really like his films. Was not surprised to see 3/4 Brosnans in my bottom 10, or most of the Moores in the “I don’t remember these well enough, might as well stick them in the middle somewhere.” Once my dad’s gift (all of them on Blu-Ray) is gifted to him, a rewatch will definitely be in order.
Each Bond’s top/bottom in my ranking:
Connery: Goldfinger/Diamonds are Forever
Lazenby: Gee, I wonder what it could be
Moore: The Man with the Golden Gun/Live and Let Die
Dalton: The Living Daylights/Licence to Kill
Brosnan: GoldenEye/Die Another Day
Craig: Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace
Funny, we have almost the exact top and bottom movies for all the Bonds! I agree with Connery, Lazenby (duh!), Brosnan and Craig. I have Dalton’s two movies flipped and I would put Octopussy or A View To a Kill last for Moore, while my favourite of his is For Your Eyes Only.
Live and Let Die was probably fighting with some of those late Moore ones for the bottom, but I think what keeps LALD down for me is some of the “product of its time” stuff that perhaps makes it not age as well as it could have. Of course all of them have product of its time aspects, but I found it stuck out more in that one compared to others. It’s the biggest discrepancy I have between theme song and film as it’s probably my favorite theme song.
Just recently rewatched GoldenEye and man, I almost forgot how fun this Movie was. Brosnan is so charming here and brings such an excellent presence to the Role. The Action is really fun and I just overall enjoyed it. Pretty fun Bond Flick!
Finally watched On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and this might be my favorite out of the ones I’ve seen so far. The Directing is splendid, I love how the colors just pop out. And Diana Rigg as Tracy is such a great presence, I missed her every second when she wasn’t on screen time. The Action is really fun and I overall really enjoyed the feel out of it. Lazenby first and last Outing as Bond is pretty splendid, he himself is one that I’d give more credit. Yes, at times his acting isn’t as good as the others, but then you get this beautiful quiet moment around the end, which is such a good note to end the Movie on. I’d also argue having him instead of Connery works in its Movie’s favor, can’t properly articulate why, I just feel this way. Overall, this one was really a lovely watch, so much to like here!
I also continued with Connery and watched You Only Live Twice. I must admit, out of those three Movies, this one is the weakest. At times the Pacing is really not too well. Connery is charming, but gives a weaker performance compared to Dr. No and Goldfinger. Blodfeld is great and is easily the Highlight in this Movie. The setting is a great change of place, but I would live if I didn’t roll my eyes at times. I do believe this one has aged as one of the more poor Outings of Bond, but I don’t feel too qualify to speak on it. I do love the Opening Song, it’s really a stellar Listen! Overall, it ranges between “meh” and or “just solid enough”.
Not sure which Bond Movies I will tackle next, as of now I am interested to do Diamonds are forever and From Russia with love next, but we will see if i do those two next!
Oh yeah, I totally forgot to update this (probably going to do three Movies each now, a decent number, so I don’t lose track).
Starting off: I watched Diamonds are Forever… and I was a bit disappointed. I know this isn’t a well liked Bond ones (is there a last Movie for a Bond Actor which is well-liked? Besides maybe OHMSS, but that one is a tricky one in that regard) because I had the expectations that while this Bond doesn’t take itself seriously, that I may still have some enjoyment out of it, which I sadly just didn’t had at all. Connery is probably a bit better than he was in You Only Live Twice, but the Movie feels tonal confused. I really like the Opening and the Song itself here is stellar, but… then it kinda looses itself. There are some great bits, I liked the Bond Girl here well enough and this Blofeld take is a unique one and yet… it’s just doesn’t commit to a more parody-esque bond, which leaves it to be neither a good Bond nor a good “Parody-like” Movie. Probably one of the weakest, if not the weakest Bond I have seen yet.
On the other hand, the two Dalton ones are still amazing. The Living Daylight is great, but struggles to fit with Daltons Bond, which is a huge departure from Moore as far as I know. And I really do adore Dalton as Bond, such a shame he only was able to do two. Kara is a fine enough Character and I think the Performance works, her as a fish out of water character works for the most part and gives Daltons Bond somebody to banter to. And yet there were some annoying parts with her. I must also admit, the third Act didn’t impress me that much, sadly. Still a pretty great one, with a lot of great Things (great Opening, Dalton, the titular Song has some fun to it, did I already mention Dalton…?)
And License to Kill is just chef kiss.
I am not sure if this is an unpopular Opinion, but this is easily a Top 3 Bond Movie for me. This one just does it so well with Dalton, I really enjoyed the Villains. I did buy the Romance Bond had with Pam(?), which at times can improve my Enjoyment for a Bond Flick if it does right (other cases of that would include OHMSS or Casino Royale)
There is a lot to love here really, it’s just a excellent Movie and the Action is top-notch.
